Just received tentative word, that 300 will debut in July on Blu-ray and HDDVD. The manroom site also has this news. Warner hasn't commented yet, but July does seem likely. Great movie, can't wait to see it in HD

People forget that it's not just the lossy audio with Warner. Since they copy their HD DVD encode over to BR, the video is almost certainly sub par to what could be done. I've just about decided to completely hold off on any Warner titles regardless of their audio formats untill they start doing transfers optimized for BR's capacity and bitrate. I realize this will likely only happen after they drop HD DVD but I can wait. For me, I just think it's a waste to spend money on high end equipment and then settle for above average source material.
I'm very disappointed that they have 300, Matrix, and The Road Warrior. These are some great movies and it's a shame they're being put out by a studio that doesn't appreciate the format. |

Just saw this at The IMAX theater and this film will look fantastic on BD.
Will Warner max out the HD-DVD and just transfer that to BD? Probably, but even with that handicap BD will look great, not perfect but great. Warners wins either way because people like me will buy 300. It's such a masterful film that I want to coddle it, like the infant of high-definition that it is; and watch my BD until Warner decides to double-dip and release a maxed out BD in the near future and christen it "The Special Edition". Wow, it's not often the influences of Dennis Miller and Monty Python appear in my posts. ![]() ![]() P.S. The above will happen and I will be enjoying 300 all over again. ![]() |

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-ente...ues-244804.php I won't support an inferior format. I just won't do it. I am so tired of this stifle innovation in the name of capitalism mentality and I won't stand for it. Will it cost more to support my habit? Sure, but as long as I have a choice I will continue to buy and support Blu-ray. Blu-ray for the people! ![]() If Warner plans to not release a standalone BD disc then I will just have to watch my DVD of the movie. They can't abandon DVD now. I can't believe how upset I am over this. You would think I just lost my first born to a beheading. But seriously, when it comes down to it Warner can do whatever it wants and as long as they see the almighty dollar, they will be there. Last edited by HDViewer; 05-04-2007 at 07:43 PM. |

The only one that WB hasnt screwed the pooch on is The departed - it just got fondled a little with a soft VC-1. We did get LPCM on that one (and how sweet it is).
Lets hope that somebody there has enough sense to spend an extra nickel now to avoid all the postage to reply to our hate mail. |

Casino Royale on the other hand has better PQ compared to The Departed on BD. I'm going to pickup the DVD just to compare. ![]() |

Warner is in the enviable position of neutrality right now. They don't 'favor' either format, but they are definitely trying to milk future benefits off them.
Allow me to explain (it's marketing stuff)... Warner's actions on locking titles on HDDVD over Bluray is actually an indicator of who they think will win the format war. Obviously, they strongly believe Bluray will. By locking down titles on HDDVD they encourage a 'double purchase' very easily in the futures market (as inevitably, once a 'winner' is established people will have to re-buy some of their library). They are simply milking the market right now. Warner isn't lying when they say they will be putting all those movies on Bluray in the future. Oh, they will... oh yes, they will. They know it is inevitable; however, they make more money by prolonging this 'format war' as long as possible. It's just the marketing approach Warner has taken (TrueHD is another example of this type of marketing). Other studios like Disney and Fox are seeing what many in marketing feel is a more 'long term' view of ROI where the faster they get one format in place the faster they can work on DVD up-converts (to HD) and make money that way selling more titles faster without consumer hesitation due to uncertainty. They are basically saying 'we know it's going to be Bluray so let's just get it over with.' Universal is at the extreme of what Warner is doing (there really isn't room for more than 1-2 studios doing what they are doing or it simply wouldn't work). Universal is building a brand loyalty with HDDVD consumers by 'supporting them until the bitter end'. This kind of loyalty is a _very_ good ROI return not only now, but even when a format 'wins' because people will always remember how Universal stood up for 'the little guy' (even if his technology was inferior in every way). There isn't enough HD disc sales to make this a worrisome or costly proposition at this point so it's a worthwhile investment for Universal... for now. 85% will be the magic number is my guess. Once Bluray has 85%+ market share then it will be over. Universal will swing by 90% as the last hold out. So for now, I'm not concerned. Warner's actions won't affect the greater scheme of things and they know it. I'm fairly certain that by 2008 we'll have a 'winner' for the most part. I do wish Warner would quit simply porting stuff over as I _hate_ getting less than quality product for my $$. |

BDA: Warner, we'd like you to start using BD 50s, LPCM/Loseless Audio, and maximized bit rate on your Blu-ray releases please...
Warner: Screw you BDA, we'll continue to short change you... BDA: THIS IS BLU-RAY! ![]() I'm excited to see this one, but damnit Warner, freakin get with it. |

Time to invest in tech. Makes me wonder how much it costs to start a studio for BD authoring? Last edited by HDViewer; 05-04-2007 at 09:42 PM. |
