Default 1.2 million PlayStation 3 game consoles sold in USA/Canada over the Holidays

Even more Blu-ray players:

Sony's PlayStation a big holiday hit
The Associated Press
Article Launched: 01/06/2008 05:51:19 PM PST

TOKYO—Sony Corp. said Monday that 1.2 million PlayStation 3 game consoles sold in North America during the key holiday season, boosting the strength of the electronics giant's Blu-ray next-generation video format.

The PlayStation 3 also works as a Blu-ray player.

Competition is growing intense not only among the latest video game machines—pitting Sony against Nintendo Co. and Microsoft Corp.

It is heating between the two latest video formats—Blu-ray and HD DVD, developed by Toshiba Corp.

Sony Computer Entertainment, the Japanese electronics and entertainment company's game unit, also said sales of the PlayStation Portable handheld reached 1.4 million in North America between Nov. 23 and Dec. 31.

Sony used the PS3 as the primary weapon to win the format war. Now that blu-ray has won, which should give momentum to HD media adoption, hopefully blu-ray will now return the favor and catapult the PS3 in the console race give it's clear value advantage.

Default Hey BR Buckeye,

Look at the key acquisition of GG and the budget for KZ2($20+ Million?). Look at the features tied into the recently acquired Media Molecule/LBP. I think the boost was there all along...timed to coincide six months AFTER the Blu-ray sales model did its job.
-Free Internet
-Home
-LBP
-KZ2

I think this is just the beginning. Home + BR Live +...well you get the picture.

GO BUCKEYES, BEAT LSU!!!!

I would be more impressed by the number if they posted the time period that they are calling the "Holiday Season"

Ok, now I'm officially impressed. Black Friday + December totalling 1.2 million PS3s is huge.

1.2 million is pretty darn good. But, it isn't great. The games still aren't there to drive great numbers.

But Halo 3 shows what can happen if and when a killer app arrives. The question is, is that killer app in the pipe for the PS/3?

Ever since I started working at BB I've met 1 person that didn't use his PS3 as a Blu-Ray primarily and as a game console secondary.

Metal Gear Solid 4.

Legendary franchise, and it's a PS3 exclusive.

Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5, and Final Fantasy XIII are all coming down the pipe. I would assume all of those will be Halo-level console movers.

I think the PS3 was just ahead of its time. A shame that because of that it was beated down in the mainstream media for the past year and a half. But finally, it is looking up for the device and we should really see what it is capable of, gamewise, marketwise, and moviewise.

Dunno if I'd go as far as to say it'll be even with the Wii, but it'll certainly be within a couple million of the 360 by the holidays.

PS3 will be in the 20-22 million range by this time in '09. The way the Wii is going, they'll have moved 35 million consoles by then. 20 million in the first 13 months and they're starting to ramp up production.

Meh...we'll see. Oh, and I wouldn't count on Square. Still, MGS4 and GT5 will definitely prop the PS3 up.

Default Blu-Ray will help PS3

I think we'll see some pretty good post holiday momentum for the PS3 as more people start looking for Blu-Ray players and realize it's a good option - and I think at this point, the games are there to draw people in. Not just the popular cross platform stuff like COD4, but also really good original titles now like Drakes Fortune, and Ratchet & Clank... they also have some really interesting games for purchase online I think, they have put a lot of effort into some quality titles there.

I've been playing GT5 Prologue. Yes. GT5 will move the console.

The Logitech G25 has been sold out of all retailers in Japan recently. Wonder why? And this is just the Prologue, which we suckers call a "paid alpha program" derisively.

enjoy

I'm really curious to know how many standalone players were sold though.
Since they drop the price below 300 dollars. Looks like they were flying off the shelf everywhere.

My friend, have you heard of the followings?

Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5, God Of War 3, HOME. - all these are playstation 3 exclusives. What do x360 got now, and how long will you play Halo3,masseffect and gears of war at 1080i(not p).

Any x360 blockbusters will look dwarf in front of them. At the time of Halo3 x360 had pretty good install base and no rival platform or software out there. M$ poured money heavily on the marketing of the game. But as a gamer, if you analyze Halo3 is not that great of a game.

Play B3yond.
