Interesting. I don't know how much detail they'll be able to get out of the "Electronovision" (aka kinescope) video-to-film look to justify an HD release, though.

You're right about that, although it's not a kinescope. A kinescope is a film of a TV monitor screen, done to preserve a live broadcast since there was no film version. This is videotape. Should be a nice boost in audio quality though.

It's not technically a kinescope but it's a very similar result.

I can hardly express my delight at this. I've watched so many T.A.M.I. clips on youtube and I was just thinking how great it would be if this got a BD release. This is my music and there is very little of it to be had on BD. Although I was born in 1958, my musical taste has always been a half generation out of step.

As an old guy, I only wish my prostate had lasted long enough to join me for this release

Hell yeah, The T.A.M.I. Show and The Big T.N.T. Show!

These are going to have to wait to be ordered. Spent my spending money on Twilight Time's 7 for $70 sale this week.

Never thought I'd see these on Blu, great news all around.

Electronovision was a ~800i video system so might show an improvement

That's what was thinking/hoping. I've heard Electronovision described as an early version of HD.

Obviously, we don't know the source material for this transfer and I don't want to prejudge it but there is room for hope. I think the analogy to kinescope is a bit harsh and may be unnecessarily off-putting to some buyers who don't appreciate the technical nuances.

Fingers crossed.

This is great news! I'm in the minority who prefers THE BIG TNT SHOW to THE TAMI SHOW, but they're both great. THE BIG TNT SHOW has never been on commercial home video before, other than excerpts that appeared in a Rhino VHS release back in the 1980's.

Will this have the Beach Boys segment that has been cut out of TAMI in the past? I would guess so since it was on the DVD.

I thought I had read that it was closer to 1000 lines of resolution but don't remember for sure.

-edit- the Wikipedia page says that several different video cameras were used, ranging from 819 line French SECAM cameras to RCA TK-60 models with up to 1400 lines. So not sure what was used for this but definitely higher res than SD.

Something else that I think I remember but don't have the source ... the Beach Boys performance was cut out after the first release of the film because of a perceived legal issue, but when Dick Clark's company was getting the movie ready for DVD release they found out that there had never been a problem after all, it was a misunderstanding of some sort. So I would expect the BD to have the scene.

From the Shout Factory product page:

Quote:

The energy and excitement of some of music's greatest grooves!

The unmistakable sounds of a generation explode onto the screen with two of the greatest concert films of the rock n' roll revolution: T.A.M.I. Show and The Big T.N.T. Show.

Filmed just eight months after The Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, 1964's T.A.M.I. Show introduced rock 'n' soul youth culture to America as never before. It's 1966 follow-up, The Big T.N.T. Show, built on its predecessor's legacy as a showcase for the hottest hit-makers in music. Collectively, the two films are an incredible time capsule of American popular culture in the 1960s, and representative of the gold standard for concert films.

This Collector's Edition is a double-barreled blast of the sights and the sounds of music's greatest eras, and features performances by future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Rolling Stones, James Brown, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson And The Miracles, Bo Diddley, The Supremes, Ike and Tina Turner, The Ronettes, The Byrds, Ray Charles, and many other American and British Invasion hitmakers in their prime!
Although at the time of this post, the extras have not been determined, but expect the extras from the DVD release of The T.A.M.I. Show to be included, which were:

Commentary By Director Steve Binder
Original Trailer With Optional "Trailers From Hell" Commentary By John Landis
Original T.A.M.I. Show Radio Spots

The TAMI Show videotape (most likely, despite the "Electronovision" moniker/hype, in SECAM 800-line interlaced format, recorded to 2 inch videotape) does not exist. What exists now is a film print. It's pretty much a kinescope; I can't fathom what else to call it. It was a kinescope captured from a slightly higher-than-usual resolution source, but still a kinescope. Now, scanning a kinescope in HD will still result in better resolution than SD, especially if the kinescope was captured from a higher resolution source.

Here's a post (and thread) getting into the technical details of how it was shot:

As a bonafide historical artifact, any improvement over the fuzzy, lo-def sounding DVD will be worthwhile ...

Most music products, especially CDs, come out on Fridays [as do the new 36 CD Bob Dylan Live ’66 box set and the general release for the Dylan 10th Anniversary No Direction Home BD] - and these are not the first BDs I've seen with a Friday street date.
