Australia The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Just realised we don't even had a thread for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey! My copy of the Extended Edition with statue rolled up today. Haven't had a chance to open it but it's a hefty one. Way bigger than the LOTR extended statue sets.

What's interesting folks is that it appears unlike in the US the only way to get the 3D version of the extended edition is to buy the collector's edition with statue. Looks like we just get the statue release which is 3D BD/2D BD/UV and the 2D BD/DVD/UV release.

Theatrical Cut:

Extended Edition:

Anyone opened their statue version yet?

Mine's still en-route. Since I live in the forgotten city of Perth, it should come anyday now. The main reason I bought the statue set was for there extended edition in 3D which isn't available separately. I hear it weighs around 5kg though

**Nevermind, just check my order status...its still in Bloody NSW (no offence to NSWer's). It was dispatched from Sydney 4 days ago and now its still at the ALEXANDRIA BULK LODGEMENT CENTRE. No Hobbit this week then

So the 3D version with statue also contains the 2D version with commentary?

Have confirmed this myself, picked up the statue edition from JB at lunch time and the box confirms it has 2 x 3D blurays, plus three standard blurays, 1 for the film with commenatary and two for the extras.

JB has it for $36.98. The 3D collector's set is $85. Saw both in store today. Big W has the DVD version for $24 (which is $30 at JB) so they may be running the BD version for a bit less than JB will be.

Regarding this 2D release, it's listed as 5 Discs..

The US 3D release is 5 discs, as Disc 1 and 2 is the 3D version of the film (according to the back info)...

Our 2D version includes a DVD copy, so am I right to assume that the extra 2 discs in this set are because the DVD version is split over two discs?

Can we get the 3D Extended Edition without having to buy the statue edition? or is that the only version?

You're right about the 2D version. 3xBD 2xDVD.

The statue edition is the only way to get the 3D as far as i know.

If anyone wants a free digital copy code from the extended edition, send me a PM. Works in NZ too.

Picked up the standard 2D release as I managed to get the counter staff to take the 25% off the sticker price, rather than their shittier $3 'special' price.

Comes in a black case, never seen those before.

Both the US and Australian Lord of the Rings extended editions in the trilogy sets came with black cases. The single releases had the standard blue cases.

The eventual extended editions will make that initial steelbook edition redundant.

Not if the next two theatrical editions are steelbooks to match it.

Just something to be wary of...

With the EE packaging, the rating sticker and Ultraviolet sticker come off easily, but the back card is attached with tape, and takes some of the colour off the cover with it. I didn't realise and I now have an ugly white mark on the front of the slipcase. Why they didn't just use gum, I have no idea.

that sucks. kinda like the universal 100th anniversary cards taped to the bottom. Ripped a hole in the bottom of the nice digibook for Atonement because of that. Can you just leave it on?

Oh you definitely can, doesn't get in the way at all. I realised too late, but it wouldn't ruin it if others left it on.

Just in case this might sway you one way or the other the edition with the Bilbo meets Gollum figure doesn't have any j-card taped to the set. No ratings logos, UV stickers or j-cards to deal with. Yes it's pricey but if you're leaning towards the 3D version with figure that might be yet another thing to consider...
