Picked up the standard 2D release as I managed to get the counter staff to take the 25% off the sticker price, rather than their shittier $3 'special' price.

Comes in a black case, never seen those before.

Both the US and Australian Lord of the Rings extended editions in the trilogy sets came with black cases. The single releases had the standard blue cases.

The eventual extended editions will make that initial steelbook edition redundant.

Not if the next two theatrical editions are steelbooks to match it.

Just something to be wary of...

With the EE packaging, the rating sticker and Ultraviolet sticker come off easily, but the back card is attached with tape, and takes some of the colour off the cover with it. I didn't realise and I now have an ugly white mark on the front of the slipcase. Why they didn't just use gum, I have no idea.

that sucks. kinda like the universal 100th anniversary cards taped to the bottom. Ripped a hole in the bottom of the nice digibook for Atonement because of that. Can you just leave it on?

Oh you definitely can, doesn't get in the way at all. I realised too late, but it wouldn't ruin it if others left it on.
