Question Audio options for the PS3

I have a PS3 that I only use the HDMI to connect to my TV and I have audio questions:

1) Can I get surround sound by using an optical cable to my receiver and still output the audio to the TV via HDMI. Sometimes I need to keep the volume low in the house.

2) What audio is outputed through the optical cable with the PS3 using Blu-ray disks?

3) Does the PS3 output HD audio sources with the HDMI cable and should I just get and receiver with HDMI?

4) Can you enjoy DTS HD or Dolby trueHD with a PS3 as your Blu-ray player?

As you can tell, I am confused as to how to get the best audio now that I have the best video.

Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

1. Yes but it will be dvd quality

2. You can get Dolby Digital and DTS but the DVD compressed lossy types

3. Yes

4. DTS HD maybe, DTD HD-MA no, the PS3 can't decode that yet. Dolby TrueHD it can. Naturally LPCM tracks aswell.

Question Thanks so the best thing is to get a new receiver but which one.

Lord Phan. Thanks for the information. Sounds like I can try and see what a optical cable sounds like but the best will be to upgrade my receiver. I am using a Harman Kardon AVR-7000 what do people like as a replacement receiver?

I have not searched the forum for this link, but have you guys seen this:

Seems like a good matrix for BD players.

Audio over optical will not be strictly DVD quality, it will be a small step up, as the DTS and DD cores from the newer hi rez audio formats are usually higher bit rate than you find on any DVD. I certainly heard an improvement when using optical from my ps3 prior to getting an HDMI pre pro.

The PS3 won't bitstream True-HD it converts it to PCM and passes that over HDMI.

DTS-MA is possible in the future and will be converted to PCM in the same mannor.
