Default Groundhog Day

Well, I haven't seen it posted yet, so I thought I would. Anyone else watch "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray every year on Feb. 2? Are there any other calender-related movie traditions that you enjoy - "Independence Day", "Halloween", etc.?

Love this movie. I want to read the original story it is based on though since it's supposed to cover many many years of repeating the day.

You will be as old as my daughter! Groundhog Day is one of my favorite movies, because in addition to being funny (I think it is Murray's best performance), it hits on a couple of philosophical levels. One of course is being able to see the effect your actions have on others and the outcomes that result from your choices; the other relates to notions of reincarnation and karmic consequences, for those who subscribe to such things. Either way, very interesting concept and well executed.

Good post and something I haven't really thought of, I loved this as a kid/young teen and I haven't seen it since I've grown older but I know this is one of the movies I'll still love.
This won't age badly like Big Trouble in Little China or stuff like that, looking forward to see it again.
My favourite Bill performance is Lost In Translation to be honest.

I was going to, but I ended up having to work early today. I'll have to watch it again some other time when I'm not so tired. Maybe next year I'll get to watch it on the actual Groundhog Day.

I seem to watch this movie at least a couple of times a year when it is on TV. I'll buy it on BD when it next drops below $10. You have to admit the situation of being able to relive each day over and over can get out of hand. Of course, I would also imagine it'd get old after a while.

Isn't that pretty much what most people do anyway?

There are certain days I would love to keep reliving.

I saw this yesterday at a Century theater. The DCP was fantastic-looking, and had much more detail and better color timing than the Blu-ray. I hope that the "remastered" version listed on this site is actually released someday.

I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl.
[Show spoiler]We ate lobster, drank coladas. At sunset, we made love like sea otters. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn't I get that day over and over and over?

One of the best comedies ever

Yes, and I believe it was a lot darker. Sarcastic. It got made because they made it more humorous than cutting.

That surprises me, Elvis, because of what Bob said.

Groundhog Day is actually a love story; Murray's character is not young any more; he's jaded and stuck in a rut. When that metaphor plays out literally, he uses it for his own benefit, usually at the expense of others, even trying to sleep with his producer. But it's always a "first date" to her, so she rebuffs him, until...

[Show spoiler]...a heartfelt talk walking around the town and then the friendly snowball fight with the kids. They fall laughing into the snow and kiss, and that night she almost sleeps with him. When he tries to recreate the magic the next (same) day, he forces it, laughing too hard at the kids and pulling her down into the snow. When he tries to kiss her, she pulls back ("WTF?")
.

Ultimately, he learns how to be humane and have a real relationship with her and others, even with his cameraman.

Groundhog Day is a chick flick!

- Kristian Idol, screenwriter

(And no, I haven't thought about watching it in early February. I would, but I have my 30 flicks from Blockbuster to get through!)

Default What year does Groundhog Day take place?

Although Groundhog Day is a 1993 film, the cars, dress and everything else about the culture clearly look pre-90's. However, the episode of Jeopardy! that Phil is briefly seen watching already knowing all the responses to its clues is the one that originally aired November 11, 1991. Does anyone have any insight as to what year Groundhog Day takes place?

Just for arguments sake, let’s say it’s 1992.

I lived thru the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. No big diff from late 80s to early 90s.

The red Cadillac's tag has an expiration date of 12-92.

It'd make sense that all the cars are pre-90's even of it took place in the early 90's. Punxsutawney is a small middle income town in Pennsylvania. People keep their cars for a while. That's true IRL too, most cars on the road today are from the 2010's. Some may be newer, but not all of them.
