Question Thoughts on this JBL speaker set

I'm looking to replace my VERY old Yamaha 5.1 speaker setup with something newer and more up to date. My budget is basically under $500, but I want good quality speakers. Now this is going into a fairly small room mind you, so I don't need a monster sub or super powerful speakers. It will be hooking up to my Onkyo 605.

Thoughts? Maybe any other recommendations on speaker setups?

I thought this setup looked great at $350...

How much juice does your receiver put out? I"ve smoked more JBL gear than Snoop Dogg has smoked joints. You go, "wow, sounds good, crank it up a little more" till you get that nasty little sizzling sound and that funky smell of fried phenolic, and school is out.

The do sound good. But they're easily crisped. Polks are more bulletproof. As long as you aren't overpowering them, it's not a bad choice.

90Watts per channel x7... these speakers are rated for 100W, so I figured it shouldn't blow them out. I've usually heard good things about JBL.

I looked at the Klipsch Quintet III set, which is $100 more, but lacks a sub, so I would have to shell out at least another $150 for a halfway decent sub... more than I want to spend for a fairly small room.

JBL Subs are usually good. I have heard these hooked up at the local BB. They sounded pretty good. Another thought would be a set of Polk RM10 Speakers(1 Center, 4 Sats). You can find them pretty cheap if you look around. Still have to get a separate Sub though.

Yeah, I like Polk, but I this set is around $700 or so... I just wonder if anyone has heard these speakers?

The other ones I was checking out were these... of course these are minus a subwoofer... thoughts on this? What would be a good matching sub to keep it under $500?

Klipsch are great too. Best Buy has those hooked up in just about all their stores to listen too.

A Polk PSW10 Sub is a good inexpensive one. Around $100 - http://cgi.ebay.com/Polk-Audio-PSW10...QQcmdZViewItem

The Polk RM10 you can Pick up Brand new on ebay for around $300

Wattage ratings are ballpark numbers - I like to go at least 50% over rated amount, for safety's sake. Spikes in wattage during loud passages can smoke speakers, especially tweeters, on borderline speakers.

In this case, the Klipsch set - more rugged - would be my option. JBL's sound nice. But they're delicate.

Thanks for the help. What do you think would be a good matching sub for them?

The Klipsch sub is a little pricey... is there a cheaper one that would be a good match?

If you are going to consider the Klipsch, you should definitely go listen to them at BB first before buying as they are not everyone's cup of tea.

Another option would be:

Check these out:
http://onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=SKS-...ss=Speaker&p=f

These are the speakers that came with my HT-S790 HTiB...the real wood cabinets and full-size front bookshelf speakers are very nice. The surrounds perform very well...the first time I fired them up, I had to check to make sure they weren't bigger than they actually are, because they sound about twice as big as they look.

It is by no means a reference-quality system, but I am exceptionally pleased with mine. The bass from the subwoofer is powerful. Also, looking at the specs for the JBL system, it looks like the Onkyo might be a little technically superior to the JBL, for the same $350.

You'll notice, also, that it's 7.1, so I guess you'd get two extra speakers...oh well, maybe you can sell them.

Actually the Onkyo 605 is a 7.1 Reciever so this set would work. They actually have this exact setup at the Fry's just down the road. They also had the Onkyo 605 with the Polk Speakers in an All in One deal as well.(Way too expensive though if you ask me! You can get them separately for less.)

I bought the 7.1 set last year (see signature) to go with my Onkyo 674 and have never looked back. The first movie I watched was Gladiator and I had never noticed the sound of the wheat in the opening scene running through his fingers. Nothing but good things to say. You should be fine as far and not making them "crispy."

I would also check out some of the monitor audio products as they make some nice little speakers that are a great bang for the buck.

Thanks for the advice everyone, still pondering, but my current speakers are Yamaha 770s I think, and they are actually like 80Watts RMS, the Receiver is max of 90Watts, and I have no issues cranked up almost all the way. Unless I can find a solid subwoofer to go with that Klipsch set, I might just go the JBL route, they do have a 5 year warranty.

Anyone have a recommendation for a solid subwoofer to go with the Klipsch Quintet II series... that is not really expensive?

Come on, no recommendations for a subwoofer to go with the Klipsch Quintet II speakers? (Other than a Klipsch sub which is too much $$).

BIC Acoustech H-100

Its what I replaced my Onkyo with...you can bargain with a seller on EBay and get it at around $200....

I highly recommend it.

It's over $400 - not peanuts - but their 12" is the best. The 10" isn't much cheaper.

Once you look in the $200 range, it's slim pickins...can't endorse anything in that range.

There's not much in the 200 range to suggest but the above suggestion of the BIC Acoustech H-100 is worth a look.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm thinking I will save some cash, and get the Klipsch Quintet II's with the Klipsch sub... looks like Amazon has both for a little under $600.
