Okay, I just bought another PS3 recently and am having problems with the audio output. I have a very basic setup that includes my 40gb PS3 connected to a Yamaha 5.1 receiver via Optical cable. I went in to the PS3 menu and selected audio output via Optical. My problem is when I go to watch a movie the receiver shuts off and flashes "check speakers." I know the speaker connections are good because I have no problems with the audio through my DirecTV. I'm pretty sure the receiver is shutting down as soom sort of protection mechanism?? Any advice/help? Thanks in advance.

If you still have the owner's manual for the receiver, I'd look up the troubleshooting section. There is often a large number of explanations in there. If not, try finding the manual online at the Yamaha website.
I can't even begin to wonder what that's all about. |

"Check Speakers" is a term to mean "there's a short circuit so please check your speaker wire connections"
So check ALL of your 5.1/7.1 speaker wiring to the speakers and from the receiver. Make sure each of them are wired correctly and are not touching each other or the receiver. The reason why DirectTV didn't trip it up maybe because DirectTV is on 2.0 channels. fuad |

Exactly. Your Yamaha's speaker protection system has tripped, so you probably have a short. I'd bet it's originating on the back of your receiver, because the speaker terminal outputs are always placed close together.
As far as I know, all Yamaha A/V receivers produced for the past several years have 192kHz/24-bit DACs, so it should handle any of the extended sampling rates thrown at it by your PS3. I definitely think you're suffering from a physical short in your speaker connections. By the way, please post the exact model number of your Yamaha receiver for better help. It will start with either RX-V or HT-R. |

Wow, thanks so much guys. I must be an idiot because I assumed it was a setting with my PS3. Anyway, it turned out that the speaker wires behind my subwoofer had some loose strands that were touching. I hate my sub wire anyway because its so dang thick and it barely fits in the connectors. But I tightened it up and, voila! No more problems!
