You won't find a HD capable receiver in that price range.

Really? I think this is what you would be looking at.

That receiver doesn't provide TrueHD, I think the Onkyo 605 is probably the best receiver at the lowest price point.

TrueHD, DTS-HD/MA, and PCM are all lossless/HD audio formats. If you want HD audio, the 605 is your best bet. If you are looking for a 7.1 track that is not HD, other receivers can do it.

nah i def want HD 7.1. now let me ask you this...clearly we can tell visually the diff between hi def vs standard but im just tryin to imagine what HD sound is like. is there a very definite difference? like whats missing from a reg non hd system that is present in HD. may sound funny...but like are there extra sounds or something lol?

If it wasn't for the LFE bug, my current reciever, the Panasonic SA-XR57 would work with decoding in the player, but it does have the LFE bug as well as problems with 7.1 over HDMI. Plus I think it is now out of production. I was hoping Panasonic would put out a newer line of recievers using digital amplification and fixing the issues, but they are getting out of the receiver market entirely now except for HTIB stuff.

I think the Onkyo 605 is the cheapest receiver that handles the HD audio formats and it is more than a bit out of your price range. Maybe a used one or a refurbished unit would be closer to your budget?

Don't know where to look for Onkyo refurbs, but if you can find a place, that would probably be the cheapest you could get. You could look on eBay for used Onkyo recievers, but with a refurb you usually get at least some warranty and purchase protection.

It is more detailed, has more dynamic range which leads to a fuller sound. It is hard to explain, it just feels more open and realistic. The important information is that it sounds really good. I won't pay full price for a BD that does not have either lossless audio or uncompressed PCM. I only buy the titles with lesser audio used, on sale, or in a BOGO.

Even with my reciever with the LFE bug which makes the subwoofer channel run about 10 dB too low, it still sounds better than DD and DTS.

I hav only heard Dolby TruHD and the core 1.5 Mbps portion of the DTS lossless soundtracks as the PS3 does not decode the full DTS tracks as of yet. I can't wait for the firmware update that adds it. Even the core DTS tracks sound better than most DTS tracks I have heard on DVD.

I only have 5.1, don't think I really have room for 7.1, I have an extra pair of Ascend CBM-170SEs that were my original surrounds before I upgraded my mains and moved my original mains into the surround position, but they are ported and need some room between them and the wall. I hear that 7.1 is just really great on Blu-Ray though, so you should enjoy it immensely when you get it.
Don't worry about not having a huge budget to start out with. I started with a cheap Pioneer HTIB setup that cost $200 for the whole setup back in 1996 and enjoyed it a lot. Over time I upgraded piece by piece. You have to start somewhere and I think the less expensive equipment has come a long way since the time I started. You don't need a super system to enjoy HD audio.

That is good. While the cheaper equipment has come a long way, it will always be true that having a bigger budget will get you more as long as you research your purchases.

I am trying to save for the Onkyo 805 or 875. I have a large SACD collection, and those models support DSD, the format used by SACDs over HDMI which is the best way to go for maximum SACD enjoyment. The downside is that I have to save longer and put up with my current reciever's LFE bug longer. Not that it is too bad, but I really want the new receiver.
