I have a pair of RTi A9s coming in today, but the tracking status says that they were damaged during transit. My shipper said to inspect the speakers for myself because the speakers are very well packed. If there is nothing wrong with them that I should take them. Otherwise it will be a few weeks before they can ship me a new pair. Either way, im covered, but this is frustrating. Wanted to see if anyone had any ideas of what to look for when I'm inspecting the speakers other than scratches and the obvious?

The same thing happened to me recently with a pair of $2500 speakers. FedEx looked like they had used a gorilla to ship them. I ended up sending the speakers back and getting another pair. While the first pair looked okay cosmetically I couldn't be sure if there had been some internal damage. Speakers are not meant to be thrown around like footballs. If you hear anything rattling inside the speaker you know the crossover is probably damaged.

RTi A9s are pretty large, it's going to be difficult to shake them and hear anything rattling.
Plus if the hit is hard enough to break lose the mylar capacitors, I'm sure you're going to see some physical damage to the finish. They should be double-boxed and suspended at the ends/corners well away from the edges of the box, so your dealer is right they might just be fine. If you're not in a rush, I'd get a new pair regardless since you're covered from that angle, nothing like totally removing any doubts and giving you peace of mind. Many of these products are packed for bear, there's lots of work that go into packaging design and if you think packages get treated well during shipping, rest assured it is not the norm. Walking into a shipping facility is like going into the kitchen of a take-out Chinese, you're probably better off not seeing what happens in both those places. |

Did you see that Amazon.com has these spealers for $799 and you get a free Polk 10" sub, or a $199.95 credit on any other Polk speaker?
