Default Evil Dead II (1987)

Does anyone here own this? Evil Dead II is one of my favourite movies of all time, and I'm wondering what it looks like on Blu-ray. Is it better or worse than the standard DVD? Comments please.

Why does everybody always ask if Blu-rays are better than DVD? Do BD's exist that are actually worse than their DVD counterparts? Since they come from an identical, or better, master, it seems like it would be impossible for a Blu-ray to look worse than its DVD counterpart.

I have Army of Darkness downloaded in HD 720p. And it looks way better than the DVD. I can only imagine what this, and AOD look like on blu ray. Its a day one buy for me when they put AOD on blu ray.

Well sorry, but the official review says different.

"I'm sorry to report that I found my old, upconverted THX-approved standard definition DVD copy of Evil Dead II to look better than it's 1080p Blu-ray counterpart."

it looked...........meh (shrugs shoulders) it was an improvement over the dvds i've owned, but not much. its the film from a low budget production so its ok. still hilarious. but i sold it since i've seen it so many times now i can't watch it over and over. i got it on the b2g1 sale a while ago. i wouldn't spend more than $20 on it.

I think its worth the up-grade. Colours are more intense, slightly better sharpness and the audio is much clearer and more dynamic. Go for it!!!

Ash is my favorite innocent bystander who happens to get sucked into the world of EVIL! What an awesome picture. Thank goodness no one uses reel to reel tape anymore - "CANDA!" Maybe someday I will get this on BD. After all, it is THX certified -- just like my oldray DVD pressing.

Talk about MAKE-UP! But that low-budget stop-motion girlfriend is so cheesy. I can deal with it thanks to the chainsaw scene.

And then goes on to give the picture quality a 4/5.

Anyway, I own this, and it's the best this film has ever looked on home video.

I've considered this before but I have the THX version on DVD, so maybe not. Can you ever really have too many copies of these movies?

Totally agree with you. How could it possibly be worse? Great movie, big fan of the movie forever and a day. It is worth every penny.

My bottom line is: The blu-ray looks better than every other copy out there, but falls way short of what it could or should look like. So, my rule for buying it would be this:

If you don't own a DVD copy at all, buy it (no brainer). If you own the THX DVD only, buy it. The blu-ray has a better transfer. If you own the latex BOTD version with the screaming eye, hold off. The transfers are the same, the blu-ray looks barely better than the DVD if you have a good upconverting player, and the blu-ray packaging isn't anywhere near as cool.

Probably cause it was filmed with an old super 8 camera, pretty much the cheapest lowest quality camera possible. There isn't much they could do to improve over the DVD versions.

except better colors

and better audio

and native HD picture, even if it isn't that detailed

I don't know about you, but I would much rather look at a native HD picture that's soft than a SD picture blown up to 1920x1080.
