thanks for clarifying HTIB... but i would like to buy the receiver separate from the speakers (as well as a new BD player)
so i ask you, what is a decent price range for good speakers? btw, i am looking at the onkyo 705 or marantzsr4002 for my receiver |

Min $2k for a 7.1
center: $300-400+ Sub: $300-600+ Fronts: $500-$800+ Backs: $500-800+ surround speakers: $500-800+ Best to get something 'nice' 1 time, that will last 15-20 years, then buying something 'OK' & replacing it in 2 years. Last edited by clyon; 02-06-2008 at 08:12 PM. |

This is my ideal order of purchase..
- 2 front speakers (mains) - Sub woofer is next.. - Surround speakers - then finally center .. (you can always do phantom center with ur mains) |

About 60% of all sound comes from the center speaker, so if just have fronts, a Sub & No center your Not going to here any dialog, just noise. Last edited by clyon; 02-06-2008 at 08:35 PM. |

The hard problem. is that it depends on what sounds good to you
you need, if you can, take a test drive at your local show room take your own source, that you are familure with, and use for all I didn't like the phantom center, and spent most of my $$ on that and my sub speakers will last thru many generations of amps and players. 685's for fronts @ $650
686's for rears @ $480 HTM62 for the Center @ $425 and set aside $400 for a sub. If you got floor standers instead of the 685's, you're looking at $1100 instead of $650, If you were to buy some a little at a time, Get the Fronts and Center, then get rears and sub down the road...... Sorry, these are B&W's, I copied from a post I made to someone else with a similar budget. They're just good speakers....... I think you'd be happy for a LONG time with these. Don't purchase speaker stands from them though, if you're trying to stay within your budget. I'm not sure about the stands they make for this model, but two stands set me back about $400 out the door, but they are GREAT, and if having good stands is important to you, then by all means, get the matching stands. |

I'm not saying phantom center is the ultimate setup .. all i'm saying is that you can do this while saving for a center channel. I was running 2 paradigm studios for awhile and they are great with this kind of setup .. Just make sure they are properly placed and calibrated.
Ofcourse the ultimate goal is to buy quality speaker set .. and not to rush for a cheap sounding HTIB set. Quote:

BB runs the $500 Klipsch Quintet III system regularly for $300. When they do, they usually run the 10", $400 sub for $250. When you are ready to add the 2 rears, Klipsch will sell 2 additional satellites direct. |
