Default Mech Anime Suggestions To Buy

So I just finished Getter Robo Armageddon today and it was freaking amazing and as a huge Mech anime fan I’ve seen a lot of them, but also own a huge number of them. However, I want to find out about some more obscure Mech anime shows from Discotek, Sentai, and Crunchyroll formerly Funimation that you guys would recommend to buy. As I’ve already seen a big number of the popular ones minus a couple of them.

I’ve seen and enjoyed
Magic Knight Rayearth
Vision of Escaflowne
Getter Robo Arc
New Getter Robo
Fafner of the Blue Sky plus the movie
Code Geass first two seasons only haven’t watched the rest of the franchise and don’t want to first two seasons are just freaking fantastic
The Big O
Voltes V
Getter Robo Armageddon
Mobile Suit Gundam 00
Mobile Suit Gundam original anime series
Aura Battler Dunbine
Armored Trooper VOTOMS
Full Metal Panic! seasons 1 and 2
Metal Skin Panic Maddox-01
She the Ultimate Weapon
Genocyber
Towanoquon movies
Neon Genesis Evangelion and the End of Evangelion
Gurren Lagann
Promare
Casshern Sins
SSSS. Dynazenon and Gridman
Valrave the Liberator
Knights of Sidonia
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
Eighty-Six
Sakugan
Bokurano
Gun x Sword
Blue Gender
Scrapped Princess
Project Ako movies 1-3
Black Magic M-66
Appleseed OVA from the 80s
Parasite Dolls
Ride Back
A.D. Police Files

Still plan to watch that I own or deserve a rewatch and need to buy
God Mars
Eureka Seven
Burst Angel
Megazone 23
Bubblegum Crash
Magic Knight Rayearth yep I still plan on buying this
S-Cry-ED

It's kinda hard to recommend anything with what you've already outlined. If you've seen a lot of mech anime already and then you're only interested in what Discotek has to offer, that's a bit if a narrow list to work with.

Right off the bat, Gunbuster is a must. Made by the Evangelion creator before Eva's release. And it's just an S-class classic regardless of genre, imo.

The Mazinger franchise is classic. But it is also very old, very long, and it's a tv series that has 70's quality tv animation. I wouldn't expect someone to think it's amazing unless you're a very dedicated fan of the mech genre and wanna see the root of it all. But if you want to give it a try, the first two Mazinger tv sets are available, then there's the spin-off Great Mazinger series, and then there are the more modern rework and reboot series like Mazinger SKL, Mazinger Impact, etc...

Other than that, someone else is gonna have to make recommendations. I haven't delved into a lot of the Discotek mech catalogue myself, and maybe someone else who's a Discotek enthusiast or a mech enthusiast can =)

I’d highly recommend watching the sequel series, Exodus.

Zeta Gundam is a must. Also Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still is a masterpiece imo.

Great Mazinger's actually a sequel to Mazinger Z, going into that without watching Z's last few episodes would be a mistake.

As for which to recommend, I say all Mazinkaizer entries and Shin Mazinger (Mazinger Edition Z), original Z was a drag for it's first half and some of it's second while Shin was a better watch despite being much shorter. Also directed by the guy who worked on Giant Robo, G Gundam, some of Getter Robo Armageddon & the 2004 Tetsujin 28 series and movie.

Mazinger Z Infinity was okay but requires watching Z & Great since it's tied to them.

I’m surprised I still haven’t watched Zeta Gundam yet, but I will get to it along with Giant Robo The Day the Earth Stood Still too.

I guess it depends on your definition of mech, being piloted big robots, androids, hybrids or just bad ass robots in general, either way I went through MyAnimeList of watched and came up with these:

Kannazuki no Miko
Betterman
Jinki Extend
Dual Parallel Trouble
Candidate for Goddess
Kiddy Grade
Macross
Gunbuster
FLCL
Xenosaga
Ghost in the Shell
Tekkaman
Gundam 0083
NieR: Automata

And just for fun Slayers Great, they have mech like golems that they fight with magic so there’s that xP

I tried watching Jinki Extend the first episode that is, and dropped it after episode 1, and well I wasn't a fan of it. Also there was a creepy pedo dude in episode 1 going after one of the girls and yeah I just didn't like it. Also the animation wasn't very good it looked pretty bad and the characters were just so super generic. Probably one of my least favorite mech anime shows that I've watched there was just nothing good to say about this show. Some of these other ones sound really good especially Betterman been wanting to watch that one.

Unfortunately, I've already seen the fantastic Ghost in the Shell movie and the Stand Alone Complex TV show I own both of them on Blu-Ray. They're both awesome

Giant Gorg is phenomenal. I just watched it for the first time on DVD a few months ago and am very pleased that Disokotek is bringing it to blu-ray.

Same the animes been on my backlog for years, and I hear such amazing things about it so I'm looking forward to getting it this year. I'm glad Discotek upgraded a number of their old anime DVDs to Blu-Ray its pretty cool when they do that.

It's been almost 20 years since I've last seen the series, I don't remember the creepy dude which is unfortunate cause I just remember the two main characters one looking up to the other, a kind of sisterhood if I recall

Very nice! Yea I finally got to see the movie when it came out on 4K Blu-Ray I believe last year and yea it was beautiful classic cel animation. I do own Stand Alone Complex, just need to finally watch the whole series, I've seen bits and pieces of it when it aired on Toonami/Adult Swim.

Betterman is quite a off the wall fever dream of an anime, mech mixed with sci-fi mixed with horror I've never seen anything like it but it's definitely worth a watch if you can find the OOP DVD's for a decent price.

This is a great thread because by you listing your mech anime, I'm starting to add even more series to my already out of control watch list, like Parasite Dolls, that looks like an intresting OVA!

Gun X Sword is basically a western Mech show and it’s very underrated
Fafner of the Blue Sky is also super underrated
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet is also really dang good and should’ve gotten a second season
Magic Knight Rayearth is just a freaking classic Mech magical girl Isekai anime series and it’s so so good I still need to watch season 2
Vision of Escaflowne is amazing

There was a two-part 60-minute OVA sequel titled, Far Beyond the Voyage, released in Japan. The Blu-rays also include English subtitles.

That looks really nice it’s a beautiful looking set I’m currently eyeing that UK Magic Knight Rayearth Blu-Ray set as it’s so so nice I think I’m going to pick it up next week. Plus it’s just a classic Mech magical girl Isekai anime series that’s so so good.

If you liked Voltes V, then Combattler V is very similar.

I am biased on old giant robot anime because I owned several toys growing up (and collecting few now with Soul of Chogokin line - but they increased their price little too much lately for me to keep collecting )

If you like the old style then Dino Mecha Gaiking and Shin Tetsujin 28(1980s) should be good too.
Macross is great but no blu-ray release yet (I still have my DVD set)- Not sure if I can recommend Robotech, since I need to watch unedited with original language.

I can definitely recommend Macross Plus, which is probably my favorite OVA/Movie of Mech based genre. And you really don't have to watch original Macross to enjoy this either.

And other recommendation from others like Gunbuster

Aquarion and the sequel Evol are 2 of my favorites. Both have a great eternal love story and over-the-top kick-ass mech action (even more so in Evol).

Personally, I consider the 1st series as a spiritual successor to GaoGaiGar, and it's unfortunate that Funimation never put it on blu-ray, even if it was just a cheap upscale. I do not recommend Logos, it is completely unrelated to either and not very interesting.

RahXephon is basically the same thing as Evangelion, but I thought it was much better (at least, when I watched it long ago. I plan on rewatching it soon).

Gasaraki
Gunparade March
Mazinkaiser & SKL
Space Runaway Ideon
Z-Mind (it's decent but unique)

If you don't mind scouring the OOP Bandai catalog, I'd recommend Argentosoma, Infinite Ryvius, Mars Daybreak, Yukikaze, and Geneshaft.

From the relatively active companies, I'd say Dai-Guard, Heroic Age, Vandread, Martian Successor Nadesico, Sakura Wars, Str.A.In, Armitage III, and Gad Guard might be worth a look.

...Okay, I'm gonna go unorthodox and recommend my go-to for any [general anime] recommendation: IGPX

It's a bit of a hybrid both on-screen [via being a slice-of-life action mech-combat-racing future-sport anime] and off-screen [via being one of earliest co-productions between Cartoon Network/Toonami and Production I.G], it just had a recent Discotek blu-ray release back in late-May, the Japanese dub is exclusive to the Production I.G cut (aka the version shown in Japan via TV Asahi), and I still feel it to be quite underrated even during the broadcast release of the Toonami cut (aka the preferred English dub cut) in 2005~

...That's it, that's all I got that hasn't been said already... XD

I forgot about this show haven't seen it since the mid 2000s which was a long time ago I remember watching a few episodes and really liking it. Although that Blu-Rays 60 bucks it isn't cheap I might wait on it.

I would disagree with your appraisal of Evangelion. RahXephon is very influenced by it and I think it’s good in its own right. However, It’s more of a hard sci-fi/fantasy that makes more sense from a plot perspective. Evangelion is more concerned with expressing ideas about alienation, depression and the difficultly of connecting with others. In that regard, it has a very satisfactory thematic payoff that is nicely complemented by End of Eva to fill in the literal ending.
