Watched this one today which is the 2nd I've seen in the set. Unfortunately the movie didn't really do much for me and after 20 minutes I started dozing and thinking about other things. Sorry to anyone who likes this movie. Fortunately I do feel like I mostly followed the plot, despite this. And some parts did engage me more, like the fights.
[Show spoiler]The bombing scenes were pretty well done I suppose give the 50s technology. Obviously it doesn't really compare to more modern depictions of PH.

Picture is good though like It Happened One Night. There is lots of grain and detail in comparison to the included bu-ray.
[Show spoiler]The bombing scenes sounded very good through my headphones.

I put the specials on it the background while I did other stuff. I didn't even realize Sinatra was in it when I was watching but it made perfect sense once I saw that. Sp I acknowledge it was clear from these specials that it was a significant movie at the time and pushed the envelope, maybe the proximity to the events was part of that. It's interesting the specials in this set on the UHDs are all in 1080i. The UHD also has some kind of TV special/remake of the movie...it calls it a pilot, I wasn't sure exactly what it was. I watched
[Show spoiler]the bombing scenes
and just skipped through the rest.

Blu-ray is fortunately region free and only has a few short specials, other than the doc that plays with the movie in the background but it seemed to be repeated from the making of on the UHD.

Well it's pretty unlikely I'm watching again, so I would only recommend this if you're already a fan.

Julie Kirgo's terrific essay alone makes a strong case for why this picture continues to deserve the attention of all of us.

I'm halfway through that book of essays and photos and I like the restoration/tech sidebars. Sony's Brian Vessa says this is "the earliest Columbia Pictures film that we have released with an immersive audio mix." And wow what differences, including more bass on boxing jabs and of course the attack sequence. But they haven't just goosed some mix elements that are already there. They've "added some complementary backgrounds." I went back and forth between the ATMOS (for me, a downmix) and the native 5.1 during a few scenes and there is entirely new ambience going on sometimes. Very interesting and I have mixed feelings. Pleased that a "legacy" option is available so we have choices.

Such casting arguments between Zinnemann and Harry Cohn! Oh to have been drinking buddies with Monty and Francis (who allegedly got hammered almost every night of the [41-day!] shoot)!

Bought this 4K off eBay for $20. Slipcover comes with it too. Also bought To Sir, With Love with slipcover starring Sidney Poitier on 4K for $20. Not bad.

Been a long time since I’ve seen this film.

Great film and really great acting. It looked fantastic too.

If you're interested, you need to watch the mini series on the bonus blu ray before the pilot episode on the 4k. It's a direct continuation even showing some of the latter scenes. However as a pilot it will leave you on a cliffhanger.
But honestly, it's pretty dire. And if the film didn't float your boat, I doubt the series will. Not a great transfer either.

Has anyone heard any rumblings of this and other Columbia Classics Collection 4K titles getting individual releases?

Very few have received individual releases so far, even if it happens you might have a long wait ahead of you. I think the only one currently in the works to be sold separately is Taxi driver.

Thanks for your thoughts; it definitely seems that way. Surprising they would make the investment to restore these to 4K and not offer them individually to people who only have interest in select films. They're literally leaving money on the table.

Agree, such a frustrating decision. At this point i've started buying the movies I wanted from third party sellers but only from volume 3 and 4, seeing as the ones from the first two volumes are sold at such ridiculous prices. Got From here to eternity for 18$ CAD shipping included, so it was definitely worth it. The only really must have from the first two volumes I really wanted was Lawrence of arabia (i'm not into steelbook), which i'm still hoping we'll get one day as a regular edition.

But as for From here to eternity, if you look around it's fairly cheap, don't wait too long or the prices will start to go up!

I noticed those sky high prices for volumes from the earlier sets as well as the reasonably priced titles from volume 3 available out there - which made me question if they may be bootleg copies. (I've been burnt before so am now always suspicious!)

Volume 3 is still readily available (or at least was a couple of weeks ago), the other two are long OOP.

The Dolby Atmos on this is excellent and I was surprised it was on such an old movie. Someone should win an award for this. Whoever mixed it.
