Visually stunning and bizzare film. I'll have to give it a rewatch soon.

Even in Fellini's visually astonishing oeuvre, with staggering eyefuls like Giulietta degli spiriti and Casanova, Satyricon stands out. In its treatment and subject matter, it effectively revisits the world of La Dolce Vita, just set more than 2,000 years earlier, yet somehow managing to look futuristic, and in the process encapsulating the enormous cultural distance travelled from 1960 to 1969. Like it or not, "modern" cinema starts here. Now, can we please have the mid-way major staging-post in this cycle, 1965's Giulietta degli spiriti?
(And I'm even going to shell out for a region free player just for this, here in the UK where they can't be bought in shops - treated as de facto illegal goods - and are woefully expensive and unreliably available on line) |

I was hoping for a Richard Simmons interview on working with Fellini (he was an extra in this and The Clowns) but it's nice that it's finally coming out.
![]() He's the harp player (this was before he lost a lot of weight and became the fitness guru we know him as today). |

He was studying art in Italy and Fellini was looking for extras. Simmons was actually a pretty familiar face in commercials over there during that time.

"Fellini Satyricon" is a statement of intent as much as authorship. "A Director's Notebook" which blurs reality with film-real was also 1969. Roger |
