Criterion Fellini Satyricon (1969)

Quote:
Federico Fellini’s career achieved new levels of eccentricity and brilliance with this remarkable, controversial, extremely loose adaptation of Petronius’s classical Roman satire, written during the reign of Nero. An episodic barrage of sexual licentiousness, godless violence, and eye-catching grotesquerie, Fellini Satyricon follows the exploits of two pansexual young men—the handsome scholar Encolpius and his vulgar, insatiably lusty friend Ascyltus—as they move through a landscape of free-form pagan excess. Creating apparent chaos with exquisite control, Fellini constructs a weird old world that feels like science fiction.

Visually stunning and bizzare film. I'll have to give it a rewatch soon.

Even in Fellini's visually astonishing oeuvre, with staggering eyefuls like Giulietta degli spiriti and Casanova, Satyricon stands out. In its treatment and subject matter, it effectively revisits the world of La Dolce Vita, just set more than 2,000 years earlier, yet somehow managing to look futuristic, and in the process encapsulating the enormous cultural distance travelled from 1960 to 1969. Like it or not, "modern" cinema starts here. Now, can we please have the mid-way major staging-post in this cycle, 1965's Giulietta degli spiriti?

(And I'm even going to shell out for a region free player just for this, here in the UK where they can't be bought in shops - treated as de facto illegal goods - and are woefully expensive and unreliably available on line)

This is one of my blind spots for Fellini, but I look forward to rectifying that with this release.

I'm gonna pick this up from the library to see if I like it or not (money is tight and so I can't really do blind-buys that often), but I think I will like it. I've loved every Fellini film I've seen so far.

I've been waiting for this one. So very excited! (I wonder if the release will coincide with a flash sale.)

Oh, yes!!! If you like Fellini you'l enjoy the hell out of this mad conceit! I saw it in the theatre when it came out-- several times (like 20), own the wretched dvd and cannot WAIT for the Criterion!!!!! My budget will scream!! But I don't care.

I need to see this, I know it's on YouTube.

Why is Fellini's name in the title? Granted, I haven't seen the film yet but I never understood that.

Gian Luigi Polidoro registered the title "Satyricon" for his movie first. Federico Fellini fought to use the title for his movie but lost the case. Subsequently the title was changed to "Fellini - Satyricon".

I was hoping for a Richard Simmons interview on working with Fellini (he was an extra in this and The Clowns) but it's nice that it's finally coming out.

He's the harp player (this was before he lost a lot of weight and became the fitness guru we know him as today).

He was studying art in Italy and Fellini was looking for extras. Simmons was actually a pretty familiar face in commercials over there during that time.

The Criterion site doesn't say whether the film includes the English dub. I love the Italian dub but it'd be a shame if the English track wasn't included as an option considering many of the actors spoke English onscreen.

"Fellini Satyricon" is a statement of intent as much as authorship. "A Director's Notebook" which blurs reality with film-real was also 1969.

ETA on the Fellini Satyricon review? Anxious to get a sneak peek at what's in store. Hopefully, this title means that Fellini Roma will be around the corner!
