In case anyone missed it, Apple released it's latest (and HUGE) set of fixes for Leopard. Many are predicting a new Macbook Pro will be coming soon. Let's hope a Blu option will be involved...

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Apple releasing anything with Blu. Steve Jobs is a minimalist and anti-optical media. He publicly stated downloads are the future and physical media is yesterday's news. They obviously wouldn't include a BD drive for backup because they want you to buy their Time Capsule, and they don't want you to have it for movies so you'll rent or buy off iTunes.
It's not 100% impossible......just about 98%. I'll be glad to eat crow though, because I'd be first in line to buy a new MBP with Blu-Ray on board. Anyway, I was looking forward to 10.5.2 because my PowerBook's airport has been acting screwy. And I had to revert back from 10.5.1 to 10.5 because something wasn't kosher with "Installer." Here's to hoping 10.5.2 packs all the punch I've been waiting for. Restarting to finish the installation now... ![]() |

This will not happen. Steve Jobs is moving away from "drives", and likes the sleek, astetic appeal of his Macbooks. Macbooks will never come with a blu-ray drive. You may be able to attach an external one but Steve will not lighten up on his new look.

I think you guys are missing several key things here.
1) Time Capsule is made for progressive time machine backups. It is still to a hard drive that can and will fail. The best way to archive data is still optical media. 2) Steve was referring to the rental model only. until the day that the standard set up in a vast majority of homes is internet speeds greater then 50mb/s and a RAID server with greater then 50TB of storage, optical media will still be the preferred way to purchase movies. Music is a little different but you will start to see the same draw backs pretty soon. 3) Apple is a major partner with Sony. 4) Apple has a very large vested interest in video/audio production, including authoring. Blu-Ray being among them. 5) Apple learned this same lesson back in 2000 with not including CD burners and made up for it with something a lot better. There is still a lot up in the air with Blu-Ray and the HD format wars in general. Price for optical drives being one of them. it also could be failure rate of the current hardware. A lot goes into making a decision as to when and how to add something like a Blu-ray drive. It's not as simple as taking a drive off the shelf and slapping in a box and then mass producing it. This is to say nothing about the software that has to be written/Modified, tested, deployed, readied, and laying out time tables for upgrades and contingency plans for unforeseen issues. Have faith. |

http://store.fastmac.com/product_inf...roducts_id=338 Btw, now that Leopard is out, does the OS really support Blu-Ray? If you google around, the only results are the discussions about Blu-Ray support once Leopard comes out. |

Industry watchers do expect MacBook Pro's soon. The wait may have been because of Penryn cooling sensor issues, or a combination of factors including the desire to give MacBook Air time in the spotlight. I second your wish for a Blu-ray option se7en. Mac Pros and MacBook Pros are many video professionals' platform of choice, so I think a BD option is a natural thing. Two main factors probably influence the wait: 1. OS X (and possibly Apple displays) need updating to handle Blu-ray's DHCP. 2. Drives are still in high demand and comparitively expensive. see: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles..._february.html (These talk of the upcoming MBP updates) http://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/07/...k-of-february/ and http://www.appleinsider.com/articles..._trackpad.html also http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/03/...mac-pros-soon/ (This one mentions the Blu-ray option) Last edited by PeteS; 02-14-2008 at 08:36 PM. Along these same lines, does anyone know of a good external BD drive that is compatible with a macintosh?
