UMG are a separate entity from the studio - this is similar to New Line and Warner Bros. Warner is a staunch HD-DVD supporter that was told by Time Warner to release BD's for whatever reason, but New Line is format Neutral as far as we know as the management hasn't been poisoned by M$.

Basically Universal Group hasn't directed it's subsidiaries one way or the other so separate studios can do what they like.

It gets very confusing. The games company owned byUniversal will be making games for the PS3 (presumably in Blu Ray). Then again some companies owned by Blu Ray companies are making parts for HD-DVD drives. Just goes to show make a buck wherever one can be made!

That's probably one of the issues/influences. The whole who-owns-what-percentage-of-each-Universal-division problem almost gave me a headache an hour ago, so I stopped looking into it.

For me this is one of the best news in quite a while. Universal Music has one of the best music titles ever, especially in the field of opera. For me, it would have been the only reason to for a second think of getting HD DVD too, if they released their stuff on HD DVD. I always hoped that it would not be so as Universal Music is part of the Vivendi group and not a 100% subsidiary of Universal studios as far as I know.

I just think of the 2005 "La Traviata" at the Salzburg Festival in blu-ray and dts lossless. I know this is a minority program but this is really something I would want to have. And HD DVD is definitely not nearly up to it! I hope that M$ is not capable this time of forcing an inferior product upon the world. It is their money and their commitment that still keeps this ridiculous junk afloat.

NBC is owned by Universal. They are both GE (General Electric) companies - nothing to do with M$ except a joint venture or two. You won't find it on NBC or Universal. Go to GE and work down.

I checked it now and I was right:

Universal Music Group is a 100% subsidiary of Vivendi Group. See here: http://www.vivendi.com/corp/en/group/profile.php

The shareholder structure of Vivendi consists of various French financial institutions: http://www.vivendi.com/corp/en/group/structure.php

Universal Music has nothing to do with Universal Studios.
So there is no problem for them being with blu-ray to which they have committed already.
