Default How do 30fps video games look on 120hz lcd?

Anyone play a 30fps PS2,PS3,X-box/360 video game on a 120hz lcd tv? Does it look like a 60fps game?

This is a great question I'm curious about myself ... Does the frame interpolation make the game feel more responsive (give more visual feedback)? Or does it result in lag which kills it?

I would think the lag would kill games that require fast response time.. Can anyone comment on the digital processing and responsiveness?

no problems playing ps3 games on 120Hz display. obviously you need to turn off dsp same as for movies.

I can't comment on the technicalities of the display, but my Sammy 4671 with 120Hz handles my PS3 gaming beautifully. I've heard people give it's pros and cons, but I play my games with "Game Mode" on and am 110% satisfied with the performance.

30 fps on 120Hz works like this. Frame 1 is shown on the screen 4 times so that by the 30th frame, the HDTV has shown 120 frames. Hence 120Hz. So it is smoother.

Understand that the HDTV does not create 90 frames on top of the 30 frames made by the game console. It just shows 30 frames on the screen 4 times longer.

I heard that there are some 120Hz displays which add in novel frames (not repeats of existing frames) using some sophisticated motion interpolation techniques. So e.g. if frame 1 of the input video shows a tennis ball on the left side of the net and frame 2 shows the ball on the right side, the display conjures up a frame 1.5 showing the ball over the top of the net. 1.5 isn't in the video source; the display has made it up. IIRC some Samsung LCDs do this (can anyone confirm)?

If this is right, and if it can be done convincingly, and in real time without too much lag, the interest of the OP's question is that 30fps (in theory) should be upgraded to 60fps: the graphics card draws 30 frames each second and the interpolation circuitry on the display draws another 30.

That would be great. Then it would be worth it for me to get a 120hz tv just to play all my old PS2 games that weren't 60fps. It will be like re-playing all your old PC games on a upgraded graphics card.

I already read the thread about what 120hz does to movies. I just wanted to know if it would do the same for video games.

Yes, those TVs do these motion enhancement for any video signal. So it would work for games. But don't use it for movies or things shot on film. It'll look weird.

I've not tried the interpolation on PS3 games. You should try it yourself.

Perhaps the OP doesn't own a 120Hz LCD with frame interpolation, a PS3 or both and for that reason is enquiring here.

Anyone care to comment specifically on how 30fps games look as against 60fps titles?

For example, does Motorstorm (30fps) look something closer to Gran Turismo HD concept demo (60fps) when played on a 120Hz TV with motion interpolation switched on?
