Default Plasma and Lcd 120hz

did some searching and not really coming up with anything...today i purchased a panasonic tcp50g10 with the 600hz technology...while watching it in the store i noticed an lcd with 120hz next to it and the lcd seemed smoother during panning...im new to flat panel as i've always been a projection guy and would like to know if the 120hz lcd really is smoother or what the deal is...thanks

From what i've been told on these forums... is that if you got a pretty modern Plasma tv, it doesn't need (or has better than) the 120hz technology.

When i bought my new Panasonic plasma i worried because it doesn't have the "120hz" technology, but was told that i should worry about that if i bought an LCD not a plasma.

if the fluid motion was off, it could have been due to many factors on the sets you saw at the store. the setting may not have been adjusted on the plasma, video source and a/v equipment the tv's were hooked up to... etc

the 120hz of an lcd is the refresh rate, the 600hz on the plasma is the sub-feild drive, 2 totally different things

It doesnt even require a modern plasma, pretty much any plasma will have better motion than an LCD.

The smoothness you noticed had nothing to do with 120hz, it was created from the motion enhancers most 120hz sets have. Samsung, for example, calls it AutoMotion Plus, Sony calls it Motionflow, etc. Basically when the motion enhancers are on, the t.v. will guess where motion is going to be and then create a/multiple non-original frame(s) with where it predicts the motion to be.

Also, the 600hz subfield drive really is just a panel that is broken up into 10 "fields"/rows and each row is refreshed at 60hz. 60x10=600. It's still a 60hz panel, it's also called marketing. Now, since plasmas handle motion just fine they do not necessarily need higher than 60hz like lcds. However, they do need higher hz to handle film(24fps) to clear up judder. Basically this is caused because 24 cannot divide into 60 evenly so some frames are held on the screen longer than others. There are a few plasmas that can switch from 60hz to a different hz for movies to clear up the judder effect.

The 480Hz you refer to is also the sub-field drive (60x8 = 480)

The new G10 Panasonic plasma that you just bought has an option for handling 24fps blu-ray playback at 48Hz as well as the standard 60Hz setting.

However; according to various sources at this website, the 48Hz setting causes flicker on certain scenes. Some people are claiming that they can see the flicker while others claim it's not a problem. The CNET review for the 50" G10 claims that it is unwatchable.

The only way to truly eliminate the problem is by buying the new V10 model when it becomes available. The V10 model comes with a option to playback 24fps Blu-ray content at 96Hz which is higher than the standard 60 Hz and is an exact multiple of 24 and therefore eliminates the flicker. Apparently, this feature was available on last year's 850 model while last year's model 800 had the 48Hz option.

I trust I have given the correct info but anybody reading this response is encouraged to comment if any of the statements are not correct.

I can sympathize with you since I'm in the exact same position at trying to decide which HDTV to buy but the good thing is we have advance knowledge that enables us to pick the right TV.
