Default How to connect to a PS3

Hi

I have just recieved my samsung home cinema system today but i am trying to set it up now but i dont know how to set it so that i can hear the surround sound through my ps3.

I currently have the ps3 and the home cinema to my tv via HDMI but i can only hear it when using the dvd player i got with the home cinema so how can i hear it with the ps3?

Does the sound system have an HDMI input? Do you have anything connecting the PS3 to the receiver for your surround receiver?

you need an optical cable from the PS3 to the samsung htib.

In PS3 settings you tell it to output audio as "Digital Optical" and then set it to bitstream.

Okay, a little bit of clarification first... how are you running the audio from the PS3 is it HDMI to the receiver than HDMI to the TV or are you using a separate cable for the audio? Either way you need to use the PS3 settings menu and under one of the audio sections it will ask what method you want to use to output audio: HDMI, Component, etc...

does the back of the Samsung have a connection that looks like this? and says "Input"?

...then you would need an Optical cable.

I don't mean this as rude in any way, but I know it may read as such, and once I say it you'll probably be like, "Oh." But . . . If the PS3 is not connected, in any way, to the receiver, how do you expect to get any sound from the PS3 from your speakers?

Just think about everything in terms of ins and outs. Everything works on putting out a signal that is then received by something else. The receiver receives your audio/video information from your sources and then passes that signal on to the TV/speakers (which kind of act as a receiver to the receiver). Once you have a picture of how everything works in your mind it's all really easy. You just have to picture how everything flows.

But yes, if you don't have an HDMI input in your system, you'll need an optical cable to connect the PS3 to the receiver.

all you need is one Optical input on the Samsung htib. (do you know the model number?)

you connect one end of the optical cable from the PS3 and the other end to the Samsung. This will give you 5.1 audio.

but what if i want to hear the surround sound through normal channels in the tv d i just need to adjust the settings on my tv or will i have to do it another way because it is all connected through the htib?

PS thats not rude i know what you mean i only realised just after i looked at it how stupid could i be if it isnt connected then obviously im not gonna get any sound.

now i have to go out to pc world and buy an optical cable which is £35 when i could get one on the net for like £5 but i dont have to wait again for another cable ive waited for the ps3 and then for the home cinema i dont want to have to wait for ages to get usin it

Do you have a cable or satellite box that you use to get your TV channels?

If so, you'll need another optical cable (if your box has an optical output) to go to the receiver. Again, just think of it as, "Where is the sound coming from and where do I want it to go?"

If you don't have a box of any sort, your TV MAY have an optical output on it, but it may not. If you don't have any sort of digital output on either your box or TV itself, you could use a regular stereo RCA (red and white) from either your box or the TV to the receiver.
