United Kingdom Considering a receiver to connect my PS3 to.

I've currently got my PS3 connected via opitical to my Samsung all in one Home Theatre. I've been considering buy a proper receiver and have a couple of questions that i'm getting mixed results serching for:

1. Do I need a receiver that decodes the HD codecs or does the PS3 do this on it own therefore meaning I only need a receiver that accepts HDMI inputs.

2. If I buy a receiver that decodes the HD codecs will i get better results by letting the PS3 or the receiver do the work?

3. Whats the settings do I need to adjust on the PS3 to get the best results.

4. Any suggestions on a receiver, £200 - £250 (maybe a little more for the right kit)

Sorry for all the questions but I've been feeling for a while that I'm missing a huge part of the Blu-Ray experience with my current set up.

The PS3 does the decoding internally so as as long as your receiver has hdmi connection it should work fine. Even tough your receiver has the new codecs the ps3 can't bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTSHDMA so it won't make a difference unless you plan to buy a stand alone player in the future. As for the settings on the ps3,go to hdmi audio and set it to linear pcm. For the receiver, since i'm Canadian i can't suggest a price range but you should find something good with brands like Denon Pioneer Yamaha etc.

Hope that helped.

Cheers, that pretty much confirms what i've been reading.

I just bought a cheap receiver to use on my secondary setup with the PS3.
Looking for exactly the same thing as you, I was using optical and wanted the uncompressed HD audio. I paid $155 for a Pioneer VSX-519V-K for the hdmi connection. I hooked it up, changed my PS3 setting to LPCM and now getting DD True HD and DTS-HD, the receiver must output LPCM and make sure the hdmi connection isn't just for video like the Sony STR500.The receiver doesn't show True DD or DTS obviously but your PS3 will when you press the display button. Some receivers will also have a extra connection in back so you can add another amp or receiver to get 7.1, but few movies are using it, but it's a nice perk for the future.
So don't spend big money on a receiver with the decoders in it already.
I went to Best Buy asked a seller and they said I would have to pay upwards of $400-$600 for a receiver to do what I wanted, even after explaining to him about the decoders already in the PS3 and a decoder in the receiver wouldn't be needed. And told him as a matter of fact the PS3 would do the decoding and the receiver wouldn't.
I will say this I can definately tell the difference between compressed and uncompressed audio.

1. PS3 can do all the decoding for you. No need for you to buy another BD player. A/V Receiver with HDMI inputs is needed to get all that glorious lossless codecs from the PS3!

2. Lossless is lossless so there won't be any differences in audio between letting an AVR or BD Player do all the work but since you have a PS3 you will have to let the PS3 do all the decoding. Do as Alain Turgeon says and set your PS3 to linear PCM and not bitstream. Bitstream won't get you the lossless codecs you desire on the PS3. The only difference you will see with letting the PS3 do the decoding is your A/V receiver won't indicate which lossless codec you're using. Depending on the AVR it might say PCM or multichannel. You can see which lossless codec you're using though by pressing "display" on your PS3 remote.

4. Pioneer man myself so I would suggest looking at a Pioneer Elite series!

I shared the same feelings as you with my old setup and once I started upgrading there was no turning back! Once you hear the clarity and the power of PCM, DTS HD-MA and Dolby True HD lossless audio you won't get enough of it! Which pill you gonna take? The red pill or the blue?

1. ps3 will do the decoding for you, now be careful you do not just want to get a receiver that accepts HDMI, you need to make sure that the receiver accepts LPCM. There are receivers out there that do have HDMI ports but only allow video pass through and not audio. Make sure the receiver accepts LPCM

2.you will not be able to choose. The ps3 is not capable of sending the code to the receiver for the receiver to decode it. The ps3 must decode the codecs and then send it

3.you will just need to set the audio out to LPCM, then go through and select the options that pertain to you. In the sound audio menu there are settings for different setups i.e 5.1 lpcm 7.1 lpcm. i do not have a 7.1 set up so i do not select that one.

4.for $250 you can get a sony str-dg720 which is able to accept lpcm via HDMI. It is a a great entry level receiver. It is not capable of decoding the new codecs by itself but will accept the signal from the ps3. It is almost like sony made this receiver to go with the ps3! It will work perfectly for what you desire. It also sounds great! I used to have one!

hope this helps out

I noticed you didn't say anything about new speakers. Be careful getting a new receiver but using your old speakers... I had a Samsung all in one receiver speaker system (HTIB), and the speakers that came with it were 4 ohm. If you use 4 ohm speakers on a receiver meant for 6-8 ohms you could do some damage to the receiver. Be sure to check what size speakers your receiver is meant for. Just a heads up, good luck!

Thanks for the heads up, just checked the spec on the Samsung sytem and if I'm reading things right the speakers are 3ohm, I'm guessing thats not good news as I was hoping to use them until the new year then upgrade the speakers.

Yeah, probably not good news... the first thing to do is check the receiver manual to see what ohms it supports... some do go down to 4 or 6.... however I haven't seen many going down to three, unfortunately. If it doesn't support down to 3 ohms, then getting a new set of speakers will insure you don't damage the receiver over time. Sorry, man!

Here's a ink to a 5.1 set of Insignia speakers for about $150.00 at Best Buy (could probably find simila stuff on Amazon or something, maybe for cheaper)... it is an easy way to get speakers that won't damage your system (they are 8ohm) on the cheap. If you do that, then you can upgrade the Insignias slowly with much better stuff without the worry of damaging your receiver. Either way, good luck!

So if I read this correctly, then I don't need a receiver that decodes the TrueHD and DTS-HD MA sound, correct? I just need a simple receiver that receives HDMI inputs for audio sound like this one

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1218065493841

It says it has "SA-CD and multichannel analog (PCM) audio playback support via HDMI".

I just want something not that expensive to replace my current receiver
