Default The Apartment 4K UHD (1960)

The Apartment 4K Blu-ray

The Apartment will be releasing by Kino on 4K on March 8th.

Quote:
4K UHD Extras Include:
4KUHD Disc 1:

NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Joseph McBride, Author of Billy Wilder: Dancing on the Edge

Audio Commentary by Film Historian Bruce Block

5.1 Surround & Original 2.0 Mono

Optional English Subtitles

Triple-Layer UHD100 Disc

BLU-RAY Disc 2:

NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Joseph McBride, Author of Billy Wilder: Dancing on the Edge

Audio Commentary by Film Historian Bruce Block

Inside The Apartment: Documentary (29:36)

Magic Time: The Art of Jack Lemmon (12:47)

Theatrical Trailer

Optional English Subtitles

Dual-Layer BD50 Disc

Film historian, and Billy Wilder biographer, Joseph McBride confirmed on his Facebook page that he recorded a commentary for an upcoming "Blu-ray" of The Apartment for Kino. Since we know Arrow still maintains the BD rights to the film, this is for certain a UHD release, just like the other MGM titles that Kino picked up as well. Will update when more details are announced.

Omigud yes. Also amazing to see one of my favorite commentators doing an official commentary recording session just to see what it looks like compared to my own measly desk attempts.

Hopefully the audio could get improved as the MGM provided audio isn't super great and is outdone by the LD release.

I meant that was what happened on the Arrow which was otherwise fantastic. In fact even the DVDs didn’t sound so good.

And I meant that in relation to Kino being sent a 2.0 downmix by MGM for Silence of the Lambs i.e. who knows what delights MGM will give them for this one?

And botching the audio on Bitter Moon by their own hand, then refusing to fix their own mistake.

Didn't get the Arrow, but it's still on my list. Hopefully it stays in print and then I can wait for reviews!

Either way, flawless film!

Will definitely get this edition if it comes with a standard Blu-ray like Kino's other MGM reissues.

I think this movie was the one that taught me people had remote controls in 1960.

I've been confident about this when Kino grabbed the Criterion titles, but now that they got a major Arrow one as well, I'm certain it's because MGM came to them first with a sweetheart deal.

Kino licenses so much from MGM, including some really obscure titles that Criterion or Arrow would never touch, As a gesture of their strong relationship, or perhaps even as an exchange, MGM likely gave them first dibs on the 4K rights to these films. This is further supported by the way the Insider answers questions about how Kino got these titles.

I doubt Criterion, and Arrow even had a chance to negotiate for 4K rights when they became available. Hey, maybe I'm wrong, and Kino was simply faster then either label, but I doubt that, especially with Arrow.

Yeah, but sometimes you really wish Kino would not get IP they aren't financially capable of restoring.

Excellent news.
(also excellent that I only own it on DVD, so it'll be one hell of an upgrade.)

I suspect that MGM simply won't license UHD rights for multiple territories, which is obviously what Criterion and Arrow would prefer (and was the case for the Blus of Some Like It Hot and The Apartment).

Criterion doesn't seem interested in getting 4K rights for multiple territories, so I don't think that's it. It is also highly unlikely that either label would simply pass on 4K rights because they were only allowed to release it in one territory, especially Criterion who doesn't exactly put a ton of effort into their UK business. Both labels know that their 4K releases are region free, so even if they could only license for NA, they know people in the UK could still import it.
