Carry On: Film Collection 1 Blu-ray

Carry On: Film Collection 2 Blu-ray July 2023

Quote:
Begin your journey through the annals of Britain's longest-running comedy film series with this 4-disc blu ray set featuring the first 4 films of the uproarious franchise - in high-definition for the first time.

CARRY ON SERGEANT (1958)
For six years Sergeant Grimshawe has been a training sergeant but never the proud leader of a Star Squad. He accepts a bet from another sergeant that in the next intake, his last before retirement, his squad will pass out top. But when he's lumbered with a motley crew of inductees, Grimshawe suspects he hasn't a chance of winning the bet.

CARRY ON NURSE (1959)
The men's surgical ward of the Haven Hospital is staffed by an energetic nursing team under the watchful eye of Matron. Their suty time is taken up not only with nursing, but in attempting to control the riotous "shower" of patients who are always up to some prank or other. They also have to contend with the amorous advances of the patients!

CARRY ON TEACHER (1959)
Acting Headmaster William Wakefield decides to apply for a post at a new school after 20-years service at Maudlin Street Modern School. Before he can leave he must deal with a visit by a Ministry of Education Inspector, but when a senior boy pupil overhears Wakefield plans to leave at the end of term, he and his school chums plan to sabotage every endeavour that might earn Wakefield praise.

CARRY ON CONSTABLE (1960)
Because of a flu epidemic, three police constables straight from college are sent to a local constabularly as temporary replacements. But their Inspector soon discovers the new recruits are pretty a hopeless bunch and issues orders the quartet are to be accompanied on duty - not that it helps matters!

How is it that the Brits can release some of the best comedy (Monty Python, Blackadder, etc) and also some of the worst ever (this, Window Cleaner)?

Chalk and cheese.

You might not like them, but the Carry Ons were very popular and that style of comedy had been part of the British psyche for some time. Obviously so given they ran so long. Almost everyone agrees they really ran out of steam for the last couple of films they did, but the times had changed and Carry On trying to emulate a more explicit style in Carry On Emmanuelle was the final nail in the coffin. Monty Python wasn't run of the mill British comedy, but perhaps the best remembered of a new way of doing things that had been pioneered slightly earlier in the late 60s by many of the Pythons in other shows, and of course Blackadder is part of the new voice of 80s comedy and arguably didn't arrive until Elton came on board for series 2.

i Love these films, even as an American. They have a charm that is unique to them. Plus, I love puns, and these films are full of them.

Definitely not for all tastes, but I am very excited for this.

The sketches that stop during them without an ending etc was done earlier by Spike Milligan during the period that Python was getting off the ground.

The Carry Ons and the Confessions films are hilarious and never fail to make me laugh. And I never cared for the overrated Blackadder

Funny you should ask, was just checking my copies that arrived yesterday.

PQ is excellent, and the usual solid master from StudioCanal, lots of nice grain, also has the AR of 1.66:1.

Individual cases with original posters:

Picture quality is indeed excellent. Finger’s crossed that there will be future volumes.

I'll support the collections as long as they keep pumping them out.

At a rate of 2 collections of 4 a year (maybe a collection of 5 titles + That's Carry On), looking at 2025/2026 when it finishes

Hope it's not just the 12 Anglo-Amalgamated films though. I know Via Vision have released the Rank films on DVD, so should be ok.

If we get the Rank titles I’ll be ecstatic. Does anyone know why SC only put 4 AA titles out in blu in the UK?

At the time it was a combination of poor sales and very few having completed HD masters ready to go.

Under StudioCanal's recent remastering campaign, they had completed new restorations for the Carry Ons they own. ITV recently completed 2k remasters of the Rank produced films and Network has released some of them in the UK.

Carry on Emmannuelle, produced and distributed by Hemdale, was distributed by Carlton at some point but later got into a legal whirlpool between the Peter Rogers estate and Euro London Films (who owns the early Hemdale catalog).

The compilation film That's Carry On (with footage from the AA and Rank films) had a rights dispute between ITV and StudioCanal. Released by EMI and later on DVD by Carlton in the UK, it's possible ITV owns UK distribution rights while StudioCanal owns the rest.

The last film, Carry on Columbus, was handed around to several distributors but is now controlled by MGM worldwide (MGM owns the catalog of producer Island World, through the Orion Pictures acquisition).

Thanks for the info. I’m not aware that Network has issued any Carry On titles in the UK though. Have these been streamed only as I’m pretty sure there aren’t any physical releases.

Some streamed in HD, others are jittery SD upconverts.

Maybe one day we will see full-size screen captures of the Carry-on BDs. Until then I am not buying.
