Chalk and cheese.
You might not like them, but the Carry Ons were very popular and that style of comedy had been part of the British psyche for some time. Obviously so given they ran so long. Almost everyone agrees they really ran out of steam for the last couple of films they did, but the times had changed and Carry On trying to emulate a more explicit style in Carry On Emmanuelle was the final nail in the coffin. Monty Python wasn't run of the mill British comedy, but perhaps the best remembered of a new way of doing things that had been pioneered slightly earlier in the late 60s by many of the Pythons in other shows, and of course Blackadder is part of the new voice of 80s comedy and arguably didn't arrive until Elton came on board for series 2.
