Default PS3 audio options question

Hi all -

With the PS3, there are a dozen or so audio output settings:

DD 5.1
DTS 5.1
AAC
...and a bunch of PCM settings...

When using audio over HDMI to an Onkyo receiver, I figured I'd just NOT select the DD 5.1/DTS 5.1/AAC settings and select all the PCM settings. The thought here being that the PS3 internally decodes everyting anyway ('cept DTS MA) and sends it all PCM.

Is this the correct thing to do?

Someone in another thread had talked about the need to have to switch on/off DD5.1 depending on whether games or movies were being played.

thanks in advance.

is there any FAQ out there on the 'net that describes what all the various settings in the XMB are for?

some are obvious but others are not.

Some older HDMI receivers can't handle the higher sampling rate of PCMs. It may not be apparent until you tried discs or multichannel SACDs and then you'll hear a distortion. If you get that, uncheck the highest sampling rate both in stereo and multichannel and then try the disc again. Repeat the process until you hear no distortion. The simplest method is to let the PS3 select automatically the sampling rate your receiver can handle via HDMI.

You don't want the PS3 to automatically decode DTS ES 6.1 Discrete and Dolby Digital EX audio because it'll fold it down to 5.1 instead of the full 6.1.
