Default games upsclaed to 1080P?

does that mean I should be playing at 720p (will it look better than upscaled 1080P) and is it true that GT prologue is going to be 1080p native?

Well, there are several games that support it with a marginal increase in quality. The ones that I own that support it are Ratchet and Clank, Call of Duty 4, and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I run all of these upscaled to 1080p. The MLB 2008: The Show demo supports it as well, though I actually prefer it at 720p because it runs at 30fps upscaled and 60fps at 720p.

GT5: Prologue runs at native 1080p......sort of. It's not exactly true 1080p though. It's a lower resolution than true 1080p I think. Not that it matters. The game still looks incredible.

I'm surprised I'm still seeing mostly 720p PS3 games at this point myself.

I think this will be the case on most cross platform titles, while we see 1080p on the newer exclusive titles.

lowest common denominator sucks.

Interesting...I noticed yesterday actually that my tv was displaying COD4 at 720p...yet it says it's 1080p capable...shouldn't my PS3 default to the highest resolution?

It upscales it to 1080p. It doesn't run it natively at 1080p. You have to go into your display settings on your cross media bar and uncheck 720p and 1080i. Then when you go into COD4 it will automatically display in 1080p upscale.

So can this be done with all games, essentially? I understand it won't be a "True" 1080p picture, but the upscaled 1080p still looks better than the 720p right?

Not all games support 1080p upscale. I have some that don't. Motorstorm doesn't, Oblivion doesn't, pretty much all EA games don't. You just have to sort of experiment with each game, enabling and disabling 720p and 1080i and then go into the game to see if it works.

1080p upscale looks fantastic on Virtua Fighter 5, COD4, Ratchet and Clank, and Uncharted. I always play these games upscaled. However the demo of MLB 2008: The Show I keep at 720p because when you run it upscaled to 1080p it cuts the framerate in half from 60 to 30fps. I don't know if this will be the case when the full version comes out or not. If they fix it to where it will run at 60fps in upscale mode, I'll run it that way.

its as simple as this. what would you rather see 1080p graphics or better AI, animations, better gameplay, etc.

Most people would rather see the later.

The difference between 720p upscaled to 1080p and native 1080p is small at best. Its not worth the tradeoff.

I find it strange that the box says it supports that resolution though, when in fact it doesn't, it can just be upscaled to it. It should say "upscale compatible to 1080P" or something of that nature.

I really wish my PS3 would upconvert all my PS3 games to the max resolution of my TV like my 360 does regardless of the native resolution of the game itself

So do I although I do technically consider this "bonus" over the actual game itself having great graphics, animations, etc.

For laughs, I'll turn off all the resolution choices except 1080p and see what that does.

From what I understand, in the beginning Sony either forbade or at least strongly discouraged developers from allowing PS3 titles to support 1080p upscale because they were afraid that every developer would just settle for that and not try to push them to run in true 1080p. Remember, a large part of the pre-PS3 hype was the fact that it supported true 1080p. Something the competition did not do. So naturally Sony wanted as many games to support true 1080p as possible. I guess since then, Sony has had a change of heart. As of now, only a handful of titles support true 1080p and most of those are the more simplistic PSN arcade titles. More and more games coming out support 1080p upscaling.

Personally, I'm totally in favor of it. I think it's the best solution overall. I'm not so sure if the PS3 has enough memory to run the more complex games in true 1080p. The more simplified games like Stardust, Bowling, etc can do it no problem. However I'd like to see how Killzone 2 would handle true 1080p.
