Looks like the addon did pretty well but with the reported numbers of standalone players sold in the US, HD-DVD is going to have a hard time breaking 100,000 units (US) by years-end..

i'm with you that they are close to 100k units. my question is that 42k global or just US?
if global, the attach rate is even less and the number of ps3 units sold even more. start including standalone BR players, and I think BR has easily doubled (if not tripled) the installed base of hd-dvd |

The PS/2 is still outselling the XBox 360. So, most of those sales are still most logically destined for the PS/3 at some point. And it seems to me a lot of people buying the add-on already had an HD DVD player. So, the attach rate of that scenario is ZIP, pulling down the effectiveness of those 42K. The add-ons are easy to get. So, given that the thing was hyped everywhere for eight months, a doubling from here would be pretty good. Gary |

I think 42,000 is a quite good number. I had expected it would be 20,000 to 30,000. Remember, many HD DVD supporters thought more than 100,000 HD DVD players sold based on the internet buzz (mainly in AVS Forum?), while in the real world, there were only 25,000 players sold as of September and 35,000 as of Dec. 1.

Where is that 35K number coming from? What happened to 70K? Gary P.S. Now we know why the negative BD stuff came flying out. HD DVD isn't living up to projections. A few weeks to go, and 250K players and 150K add-ons need to sell to meet projections. Last edited by dialog_gvf; 12-14-2006 at 02:12 PM. |

This is exactly what I was talking about when the Add-on was launching. It seems that most of these add-ons were purchased by members of AVS Forums as secondary players. One guy purchased five of them and wasn't giving them to other people. I wonder what the ratio of add-ons sold to the number of actual new customers is?

Here are some more SUMMERSALTS OF DENIAL!
Sheesh. I have never seen so many people give so much for an inferior product. I've lost so much respect for the opinion of so many people. Any objectivity has been completely tossed overboard. |

That is completely ridiculous, 20m PC drives, they don't even have an IDE drive out and the recordable media specs are at 0.9 status (i.e. not finalised). WTF is he smoking, whatever it is, it is most definitely stronger than whatever they smoke at AVS.

Are there even enough used computer parts for Toshiba to make that many players?

A few things needs to happen within the next three months, including my other CES predictions:
a) Panasonic, Sony and Pioneer would have to come up with a firmware that will enable these players to do TrueHD and DTS HDMA b) Samsung to release second gen player that is much better than their first, with native 1080p60 at least and of course advance lossless audio decoding c) The BDA finalizing the rewritable standards so that players can read what is being burned on the PC. d) The price of BD burner drives goes down by a couple hundred dollars. e) Apple and PC manufacturers to support BD drives OEM. f) Shaving Ryan's Privates finally arriving on BD. Even if things happen up to e), BD won't need Universal to turn the tide. By then, the BD wave is a tsunami. fuad |

Nintendo's controller outsells rival pads and Xbox 360 HD-DVD
Data trackers NPD have published new figures for videogame accessory sales in the US, revealing that Nintendo sold 270,000 Wii remote controllers during the month of November. In the same period, 153,000 nunchuk peripherals were also sold, while consumers snapped up 476,000 Wii consoles. Nintendo's handheld is also continuing to prove a hit - the third most popular accessory for the month was the NDS Lite Starter Kit, racking up sales of 154,000. Microsoft's HD-DVD add-on for Xbox 360 hit the shops on November 7, and 42,000 units were sold over the course of the month. The second best performing accessory overall was the Xbox 360 wireless controller, with 251,000 units sold, while 84,000 consumers bought the 360 Play and Charge kit. The Sixaxis controller for Sony's PlayStation 3 fared less well, shifting 98,000 units. However, 152,000 of Sony's PS2 Memory Cards were sold, and Nyko also shifted 100,000 units of its third-party version. Gamers also bought 186,000 Dualshock controllers for PS2.
