I have a PS3 60g. Got it when they first came out. Lately a few movies have been abit choppy and certain parts. Also a few older games i used to be able to play will not run. Any ideas?

Thats pretty. odd... Try cleaning out the dust. It could possibly be your drive going - which is doughtful since it hasnt been verty long since the ps3 was even released.
Im willing to bet your lens is dirty. Clean the thing! Not sure if those soft CD Lense cleaners work for BD drives though... when my ps2 had lens problems i just took it apart and manually cleaned the lens. Not sure if you wanna be doing that with your ps3 though.
Good luck getting it fixed.

One idea --- Fingerprints.

I bought a used copy of Motorstorm and loaded it up to check it out and it was loading levels and stuff very, very, slow. I thought,.. man this game has the longest load times.

Then,.. I noticed the disc was covered with fingerprints, So,.. I cleaned it. Presto... loads pretty dern fast now.

So,.. I cleaned the fingerprints off all my Blu Rays. I bet most of them could have been used for identification purposes because I thought fingerprints didn't matter due to the anti-scratch coating. Instead oils seems to stick and make perfect fingerprints.

These days,.. I've changed the way I handle the discs and no more fingerprints are going to be happening here.

(Also,.. I have the habit of cleaning any Netflix before putting them into the PS3 but I guess I didn't do that for some reason with a recent rental of Sunshine and it had all kinds of playback problems. I took it out and noticed it looked like it had some oily haze on it. I cleaned it and then all was right again.)

Where do have your PS3 sitting? Is it in a cabinet? Or is it placed in an area where the vents could be bouncing off of a wall and back at it?

I only ask this question because I too own a 60GB PS3 (bought at launch) and started noticing some similar issues with the POTC Movies, Sunshine, Terminator 3, etc. once I put it in an entertainment cabinet. These were movies that previously play with no issues. Once I oriented the PS3 to vent out of the cabinet, I had no more issues.

I've taken these steps
1. Made sure it was fully updated
2. Used an air can to blow it out (today)
3. I have a cooler (the 5 fan one) attached
4. I've moved the unit
5. Checked all cables (attached to a pretty much new 42" LG)
6. Have double checked disc surfaces (i'm a real stickler for prints)
7. Have it standing (also had it laying)

I've noticed it on POTC , Die hard 4, Saw 4 , T3 and maybe a few others. It's not even during an action scene just a random *stutter or chop*
Sound is spotless.

Funny you shouls say that because my 60GB just stopped reading blu-ray discs altogether. When I put in a dvd it reads it but a game or blu movie its like there is something wrong with the lens, strong enough for dvd but not for blu-ray anymore. I dont think its under warrenty anymore I was thinking of sending it to sony for repair, anybody know where to send it?

I don't know if it's an issue anymore but try disabling the wireless adapter during movie playback (last year I had some stutter and it was due to the connection/deconnection of the wireless connection).

It's worth a try
