Default PS3 starting to act up?

I used to be able to turn it off just by hitting the back switch. Now it asks me to hold down the reset button until it blinks and then hit the back switch?

If it is asking you then I would not call that acting up, unless it is being rude about it. However, technically holding down the reset button is the way to do a proper/controlled shutdown, you could also use the XMB and under the users select "shutdown" or hold in the PS button on a remote/controller and select "turn off" then if you want you can hit the button on the back of the PS3. Just hitting the switch in the back while it is on is kind of like pulling the plug on a computer while it shuts it down it is not the the best way.

When does it ask you to hold down the reset button?

it's never a good idea to kill it from the back if that's what you meant. Use the XMB or hold the touch button on front first.

I wouldn't say using the power switch to turn it off is recommended, for any kind of hardware, you wouldn't turn your computer off like that, would you?

The PS3 is a serious machine now rather than a simple games console, you can't just hit the power switch and expect everything to be ok, you should turn it off the proper way in my opinion.

If I saw somebody turning it off by the power switch every time it would make me cringe.

See I've had this machine for almost two years now and I never knew you shouldn't just hit the power button. It tells me when I turn it on if I turned it off like that that I turned it off incorrectly.
