Last week I was just about to buy a Panasonic DMP-BD30K player (based on great performance reviews and smaller depth of the case) but thought I should compare it to a Sony BDP-S300 that was connected to a monitor via component cables. I have a 2004, pre-HDMI, Mitsubishi HD Projection TV so component connection is a must.
The Sony looked incredible with the component connection and I could just barley tell a difference with the HDMI connection. The Panasonic looked virtually the same as the Sony with the HDMI connection. However, the component connection using the same cables looked terrible with vivid ghosting around the characters and figures. Could this be a problem with the Panasonic or does this unit require you to reprogram the resolution for the component outputs? Thanks. |

My Mitsubishi TV has a HD digital reciever that is capable of 1080i with component inputs. My Sony/Panasonic comparison was at Circuit City using a Sony LCD with both HDMI and component inputs.
I assumed that both Blu-ray players would automatically produce a 1080i signal from the component outputs while playing a Blu-ray disc. Maybe that isn't the case. |

I use a S-300 with component out to a 51 inch Toshiba CRT and the picture is outstanding, i had the set ISF calibrated so that helps but it works very well.

The reason I ask is because if you had a PS3, it can output the video through Component while sending audio through HDMI at the same time. (which I don't know of any other player that can do that)
This way, if you had an HDMI Receiver you wouldnt need to upgrade the TV. You could get Lossless audio from HDMI, while using Component for video. Just something to think about. ![]() |

I don't have an AV reciever but I'm not that concerned about the audio right now. I'm just hoping to get great HD video using component connections.
The Sony video looks great but that extra 3 inches of depth will make putting it on top of my projection TV almost impossible (my only option right now). I would have taken the Panasonic but the video looked like crap compared to the Sony with the component connections. |

You will have an excellent picture from every bluray player available, and component vs. hdmi picture in most cases is almost identical. Should not be a major worry, I would say. ![]() |

Tonight I went back to the store, checked the Panasonic manual and prepared for another DMP-BD30K vs. BDP-S300 showdown with component connections.
Here is the deal on using the Panasonic with component connections. First disable the HDMI output. Then, select the resolution for the component output (default is 480i). Like before, with HDMI outputs both units looked fantastic. However, with component outputs the Sony still killed the Panasonic. Apparently the salesman had the BD30K configured according to the manual the first time around. Surprisingly, the bad ghost images were still there. So, I'm sticking with the Sony. Thanks to everyone for your inputs. |
