Hello all, I just registered right now.
I am sorry if this has been discussed already, but I am just a bit confused here. I just recently purchased my PS3 (Wednesday) and want to try out a Blu Ray movie (kingdom of heaven). However I came across at a different forum (gaming forum) that if your tv does not support 1080i/p then the movies will get down converted to 480p. My tv is the Samsung LNR26W, which supports 480i/p, 720p and 1080i. Its native resolution is 1366x768 however. I have my PS3 hooked up to my tv with a HDMI cable. And have my PS3 hooked up with an optical cable to my sound system (logitech Z-5500). When I purchased my HDMI cable, my PS3 automatically set itself up to 1080i. When I play my video games the video content is presented in 1080i. I know it because my 360 is set up at 1080i as well and the picture quality of Resistance looks extremly similar to my 360 games when displayed at 1080i. Now I am wondering if I was going to purchase Kingdom of Heaven, would the movie be displayed at 1080i or 480p? Because I just tried out the standard DVD (the Last Samurai), and it was shown what I believe to be 480i. The PS3 actually down converted the dvd. And once again I am sorry if this has been already discussed it is because I am worried. Thanks for any help. ![]() |

actually all DVD's are 480i and the ps3 doesn't upconvert yet.
however, the ps3 will display 1080p and lower material. because your t.v. accepts 1080i, you'll have a slightly altered image from 1080p but will still look fantastic. |

Ah okay thanks that relieved me there.
I was worried about it. And thank you for informing me that the PS3 does not upconvert standard DVD's (as of yet hopefully). I thought it would like the 360 does. But thank you again. Great now I can purchase Kingdom of Heaven with peace of mind. ![]() |

no worries. i actually already brought up a few articles. the 360 does not upconvert DVD's. that must be done over hdmi or dvi to legally accomplish this (or so what i just quickly read). so no, the 360 does not since it only has component.

![]() ![]() ![]() My 360 is currently in repairs, otherwise it would be in the picture as well. And hopefully I get the chance to buy Kingdom of Heaven tomorrow. And BTW what is the number one rated Blu Ray disc to own? Last edited by Facade19; 12-18-2006 at 06:12 AM. |

Well as far as I know after the spring update the 360 upconverts standard dvd's to 720p via VGA. I have not tried it yet. But for some odd reason most of the dvd's that I have watched on my 360 look better than the upconvert dvd player (sony brand) in the living room. |

Others were: 2. Superman Returns 3. Underworld: Evolution 4. Terminator 2: Judgment Day 5. Kingdom of Heaven 6. Ice Age 2: The Meltdown 7. Click 8. Aeon Flux 9. Good Night & Good Luck 10. Ultraviolet 11. Stealth 12. Training Day 13. Fantastic Four 14. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang 15. Silent Hill 16. The Terminator 17. Crash 18. Dinosaur 19. Saw 20. Into the Blue I would be the first to say I don't agree with all the listings but have made some purchases based on the rankings that I have been most happy with. Magazine was given to me and can't find a date on it so no doubt some new releases since published that would rank higher now. Good ref though. |

Thx for that list.
![]() I will have to check out T2:Judgement Day as well. I wonder when Blu Ray Spiderman movies will be released. Would be nice to watch Spidy on High Def (saw it a few times on HBO HD and I absolutely loved it). Can only imagine how much better the PQ is on Blu Ray ![]() |

So looks like we have a bit of a wait then get all 3 in one hit. T2 is superb. Have seen it so many times and even updated existing DVD's with newer 'better' DVD releases. T2 on Blu-ray is a big step forward again. |

Just for your info the playstation 3 does upconvert dvds to 480p, and if you are using HDMI thats the lowest resolution that it supports. Thats why PS1/PS2 games look kinda bad.

that's just progressive scan, not upconversion.
upconversion would be using some technique to upgrade a 480i picture to 720p or 1080i/p. |

Well actually, for a 480i (or 1080i for that matter) true interlaced 60i (videotaped) source going to 480p (or 1080p), 60fps is an "upconversion" if done with an advanced deinterlacer, since it fills the interlaced field's in between scan lines with interpolated data to create a whole frame. With the best deinterlacers/interpolators you get close to a 480p, 60 fps shot look (or 1080p 60fps for 1080i) from 60i. Remember, we have interlaced 60i motion, and progressive 24fps/30fps motion sources.

I guess some people are not particular about arrangement (like me ![]() I mean, who cares about positioning? As long as there is sound and you can hear it, it doesn't matter where you place it :P |
