Hi all,
I was wondering you all could help me out. I am about to get rid of my 5.1 setup I have now and use the money to purchase a Onkyo system. I was wondering where would I be able to place the 7 speakers at? I don't have much room because I live in an apartment, but I have an idea of how I want it, and I do not want cables all over the floor as I do have 2 dogs and one of them has a problem with cables, lol. Cost me nearly 200+ on one cable a few months back. Anyway, I only have a stand. I'll post a picture if that helps. I was thinking perhaps, within the stand itself. The fronts, the surrounds and the center surround in the stand, then the center channel on top of the stand infront of the tv and the sub on the right side of the stand. I wish I had more room, but I don't. I hope this would sound good as well. Thanks. Last edited by jcook71506; 08-04-2008 at 02:57 PM. |

Why do you want 7.1??? Have you tried to calibrate you speakers you have now??? What don't you like about your system now and what do you want in your new system..anything but 7.1??? I don't really like 7.1 because of the way your ears pick up the sound...if you have a speaker right behind you it is hard for your ear to pick that up and know where it came from because your ears point forward...maybe you should upgrade you 5.1 system with new speakers or a receiver???

i dont use stand for my speakers. i have two towers for the front, and all four surrounds are on the wall. wires go along where the wall meets the ceiling (no attic). then use what ever you want to cover them up to look more apealing.
do whatever you want. your taste with your money. i dont understand why people question why others do what they want to do that has nothing to do with them. guess i never will. if your sitting in the middle, speakers are behind slightly to the side. not directly behind, that would be 6.1. check out a speaker layout at dolby labs web site |

I just got a Onkyo 605 today, I am planning on using my current 5.1 speakers & subwoofer for awhile. I don't know if or when I will upgrade to a 7.1 speaker setup.
In my room, for my rear speakers, I run them under a 8x11 rug (that stretches from TV to sofa) to keep them hidden. |

I don't agree with the main thread on this. I think you should upgrade your system to 7.1. I know you have a small apartment, but you can also purchase speakers like mirage omnistats.
The idea of a surround system is to be surrounded by it. In front of you is a soundstage that consists of the center and two fronts. As long as the center is in the middle of the length of the screen, it can be on top or on the bottom. Fronts obviously off to one side and the other spread out as wide as possible. As for side surrounds, they should be placed so they are slighting behind and slighting above your ears when you are sitting in the main viewing seat. Rear surrounds honestly should be placed on the ceiling a few feet on either side of your seating position. Do this and you will surround yourself with the sound. It'll take a while, but eventually all blu rays will be true 7.1. They aren't now, or I guess there may be a few, but you should try to prepare for the future. Just me 2 cents... Anyone who says he doesn't like 7.1 has never heard a spaceship (as in Star Wars) fly from right behind the head to the front ... no way to get this feeling with 5.1 ...
... true, in most movies there'll be not much of a difference though ... |

you guys say 7.1 is great which it is but not many movies are 7.1...but if he isn't happy with his set up how is 2 more speakers going to fix the problem...I am guessing 9 out of 10 people here don't have their speakers calibrated...the OP needs to go out and buy a sound pressure level and calibrate his speakers...IT WILL MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!

Well to me it sounds like he doesn't know why he wants a 7.1 system...I think like I said before he needs to calibrate his speakers now and then when it is worth getting a 7.1 because more then like 2 movies are in 7.1...he should then get his other 2 speakers...I think a calibrated 5.1 system will sound better then a "thrown" together 7.1...

Why would you want a 7.1 system in a little apartment or anywhere right now??? There are very very little movies in 7.1 and it isn't going to make it sound any better in a normal movie...I guess what I was trying to do is save this guy money and open his eyes to something different he may have not of seen or known about...
