Default The Best Movie Villain

Who is the best overall movie villain?

(from the list)

P.S. I was going to combine Ledger and Nicholson, but both actors are just too different in their portrayal of the Joker.

If not on the list, say who you think is.

I think Scorpius from Farscape should really be on there. (I know it's a TV series, but I have never seen a better Villain IMHO)

God! That's a tough one! We should all know that villains really make the hero, so they are extremely important to the story. I had to go with Bill the Butcher (Gangs of New York) because I really grew to love that character and IMO Daniel Day-Lewis' American accent is awesome

I took into account the psychological threat when choosing: (SPOILER) Bill became like a father to the hero (DiCaprio) and the hero had to complete his "task" well call it.

Psychological reasoning is why I almost chose Hannibal Lecture; he's just awesome but not reallt the villain IMO. (Red Dragon is my favorite of that trilogy)

While I think Palpatine is an obvious choice, one of the most overlooked villains in the movies is the Soylent Corporation (Soylent Green). After all, they were making food out of people. Human---It's what's for dinner.

Just look at the poll results in this thread asking the same questions:

Either the Joker ( Ledger's version - more menacing ) or Darth Vader. Two iconic villians.

Sorry about that. I tried searching it but it didn't come up because they spelled villain wrong. Anyway, you can vote for the best villain instead of your favorite this time I guess.

Obviously Vader/Emperor are pretty iconic.

But for sheer entertainment in what is one of the best (if not the best) action movie ever made, I'd say Hans Gruber from Die Hard.

All joking aside, you really can't top Vader for overall Aggro-rag-Rage-icity

He takes the lead in Combat, choice of weaponry, and houte-fashion sense.

His motivation is simply "I hate you....period...end of story"

He hates himself, he hates his boss, he hates puppies and Jawas, he CLEARLY hates stupid admirals and he displays total disregard for the union construction crew that was working on the death star.

PLUS...anyone who is willing to hack limbs off his own child, try to kill said child and then talk smack about turning the OTHER child after the first one has been slaughtered....totally bad.

I heard he even flew to tatooine after Jabba's sail barge blew up to have his sick way with dead dancing girls.....pinky swear.

John Doe from Se7en...

they wouldn't have caught him had he not turned himself in...he was a brilliant mastermind and this movie is one that still bothers me today...Kevin Spacey is simply brilliant in this role.

Totally! Why didn't Spacey get nominated for THAT movie?

Magneto may come from a place of such utter self-righteousness that he sees himself as a hero.

The Joker may be the most utterly pure villain ever conceived (without being derivative)

Professor Hess, from The American Astronaut, however . . . he has the most perfectly villainous psychosis. Perfect and pure are not always the same thing. And, well, perfect is always better than self-diluted (like Magneto)

Here's the title character's description of Professor Hess, when he is asked by a boy he knows if Professor Hess is his friend:
[Show spoiler]
"A question to which a 'yes' or 'no' answer would not suffice . . . He disappears for long stretches of time and then he finds me, kills everyone I come into contact with, and tries to forgive me. When he does that, he's going to kill me."

boy - "Do you like him?"

Samuel Curtis - "Yeah . . . he's like family."

boy - "And, when he forgives you, he's gonna kill you?"

Samuel Curtis - "That's the kind of guy he is."

boy - "What kind of guy is he?"

Samuel Curtis - "He's a birthday boy. He kills without reason. If he has no reason to kill you, then he can kill you . . . but if he has a reason to kill you, then he's got a problem. If he kills you without resolving that problem, you'd be dead and the problem would go on forever, unresolved."

boy - "That doesn't make any sense."

Samuel Curtis - "Yeah, it does."

Observe the phone conversation, in which Professor Hess gives Samuel Curtis (the title character) a telephone call right before the spoiler-tagged dialog:

Professor Hess: "Guess how old I am."

Samuel Curtis: "I don't know"

Professor Hess: "I'm ninety-six."

Samuel Curtis: "No you're not."

Professor Hess: "Yes I am! I'm ninety-six! Why won't you believe I'm ninety-six?"

Samuel Curtis: "I guess you just look younger."

Professor Hess: "Well, what would you say if I said that I'm younger than ninety-six because . . . because I just am?"

Samuel Curtis: "I'd say 'goodbye', Professor."

Professor Hess: "I have a picture of you. Guess what you're doing."

Samuel Curtis: "I'm taking a s---!"

Professor Hess: (LAUGHING) "I put it next to my trophy and then I say 'Ooooh, there's a stinky boy!"

Samuel Curtis: "I gotta go, Professor."

Professor Hess: "Okay, FINE! But if you see any big pictures of me, don't tell anybody you know me!"

Samuel Curtis: "It's a deal!"

Professor Hess: "No! No! No, You don't have to see any big pictures of me, because I'm going to CATCH UP with you. And then, we're gonna have a BIRTHDAY PARTY!"
