Default DVD-Audio and SACD

I always have a hard time finding titles in either of these formats. I have DVD-audio via Creative's software suite that came with my sound card. SACD via PS3. I gotta say that BOTH formats are awesome with my mid-fi setup!... Really brings my stereo to life! With that said, are there any record stores, or online retailers with a decent selection of these formats?... My understanding is that they are now obsolete formats. At least that's what the salesguy at Ken Cranes said. I know that they're out there, maybe not necessarily in production anymore, but somwhere someone's gotta carry them. Any help would be much appreciated!

You'll find a lot of useful SACD reviews and online store links at http://www.sa-cd.net/ .

It's pretty much THE online resource for Super Audio CDs.

that's great that you're enjoying it even with a mid-fi setup. do you have surround speakers? that's also very exciting. for music, try to have good backs as well as your fronts, if you can.

a great (and growing) resource for everything that's not sacd, is

http://dvd-a.info

the guy recently added blu-ray music releases.

Yea, i've got a Polk RTi 7.1 channel setup, RTi6 up-front, CSi5 center, 2-pairs of Fxi4 for rears and Definitive technology PF1500 Sub for the low-pass... it sounds awesome... for my stereo to sound better than it does... i'd have to spend thousands to justify an adequate sound upgrade.

I really appreciate all the links u guys have provided... while support for these formats is pretty much unheard of in So. Cal, looks like Online shopping's the way to go.

As to what my musical tastes consist of... I grew up with hip-hop, but the synthesizer-heavy tracks just don't seem like they'd really shine on these high-end formats... But i can appreciate a good jazz tune, and I like Classic Rock too, in particular Beatles, Led Zepplin, to name a few. I'm recently awaiting my copy of Sea Change, Beck on DVD-A, which is supposed to be a reference quality recording. My personal favorites so far are Mana-Unplugged and Supernatural-Santana both on DVD-A! One thing I've been curious to get into are those Telarc releases that so many people review on magazines. Any recommendations?

I created a thread on "A Guide to SACD" and another one on "A Guide to DVD-A and DualDisc". They have a list of vendors that sell SACD, DVD-A, and DualDisc.

SACD:

DVD-A & DualDisc:

note to OP:

its not a 'dead' format. there are quite a number of avid collectors out there, and certain dedicated people who still buy SACDs and DVD-Audio formats.

its sort of like the MiniDisc player here in America. there arent that many out there, but there is a group of MD enthusiast. outside of america? different story.

it aint like the cassette or the 8 track i can tell you that...

Yes, America is where MiniDisc was the least popular.
In Europe and Japan it is still the #1 portable digital music recordable media.

I thought the MiniDisc was awesome technology. I had 2 minidisc players (although one broke), my sister bought one, and my bro too.
Too bad it never caught on in USA, too many competing formats and then MP3.

I have a question about SACDs though too...
I just started to get into them, and DVD-a too, but am wondering, since MP3 is the real "winner" of the music formats, how are these other formats doing with releases? Do they get many new releases? Do they have a "bright" future? Will I see more things I want on them?
I must say, I am really into things like Prog rock and Classic Rock and the like, but have had a hard time finding many titles on SACD so far. Dark Side of the Moon is awesome, but I want more like that! Any suggestions?

I dont necessarily think that the MP3 is the 'winner' in this case, due to the amount of detail lost in conversion. sure there are others who can blast it way up, but still lose some detail.

oh, if ever you get a copy of the DSOTM in original quadraphonic, straight from the archives (like it was meant to be), THEN you'd be amazed.

it was re-released twice if im not mistaken.

To me, MP3 audio is little better than cassette.

I had the last-gen Minidisc, a Sony player which stored 1GB per disc. Used it til the PSP came along since I found that the latter sounded slightly better. (Did an A/B test using the same mp3.) Then Sony boosted the FW so the PSP could play uncompressed WAV audio. Goodbye mp3s! Ripped my whole CD collection to WAV and haven't looked back.

Apparently there's this new "FLAC" lossless compression codec which might eventually challenge mp3s. I can see it happening if the next round of iPods support lossless compression.

DVD-A seems to have kicked the bucket (no new releases I'm aware of). SACD is struggling on for classical music with a few (perhaps a couple dozen??) releases each year. The pop/rock SACD releases like the Genesis, Moody Blues, Kinks etc are _very_ infrequent. For my part I don't care, I'm snapping up as many of these as I can find. (Now up to 105 SACDs/DVD-As at last count.)
