many people say the ps3 cant decode dolby true hd

I always thought it could decode it just not output it. Doesn't it just convert it to regular dobly digital?

No, over HDMI it outputs TrueHD via LPCM. It is TrueHD, if using HDMI.

Let me now ask a question....

The respected sound expert members have always said that in order to decode the Dolby TrueHD tracks you have to set the PS3 to "bitstream" the signal so that the receiver can decode it. When I do this, the TrueHD track only registers as Dolby Digital by my receiver (Onkyo 805). Should it not reflect the TrueHD on the display panel of my receiver if the PS3 is bitstreaming the audio properly and the receiver is decoding it properly?

The PS3 cannot bitstream the hd formats, only DD and DTS "core" track. If you set to PCM the PS3 will decode the TrueHD into PCM and send PCM out over the HDMI cable.
You cannot use the receiver to decode.

In a nutshell:

The PS3 decodes Dolby TrueHD from 1 to 7.1 channels all the way to 24-bit @192kHz.

To get the lossless Dolby TrueHD track you must set your HDMI audio output to PCM.

If you set it to "bitstream" you will only get the lossy companion (core) DD 5.1 track.

PS3 decodes trueHD fine. I dont know where you heard otherwise.
You have to:

1) Set your PS3 to PCM
2) Use HDMI
3) Set your receiver to accept PCM signals

And lastly, select the Dolby TrueHD track on the disc, and there you go.

What I don't understand is, why do people spend the money to have nice recievers like the Onkyo 805 or 875 or even better when the PS3 will never be able to bitstream HD audio to the receiver to decode? If the PS3 is limited by the internal hardware then why not buy a cheaper receiver that will just pass the HDMI signal and let the PS3 internally decode the HD audio codecs?

Because the 805 has other features I wanted besides next gen audio decoding, like THX Ultra2, Audessey MultXT, etc.

Also I don't plan on using the PS3 forever as my primary BD player. So I am future proofed in not having to by a new receiver to do the next gen audio at that time.

I see. I guess I am just ignorant because I don't know what the THX Ultra, Audessey MultXT does?

For number one, don't you mean PCM? The PS3 can not bitstream TrueHD.

Expensive receivers have existed long before HD audio codecs. Maybe its the added connectivity, added features and supposed increase in sound quality that makes people buy those more expensive receivers? Not to mention the 875 has an advanced video upconverter.
