Default PS3 wont play True Dolby HD or DTS-HD

Is there anyone else who is having a problem with the PS3 not playing the HD-Audio formats? I have mine connected to my Onkyo TX-SR875 via HDMI and I've done all the firmware updates and while scrolling through the audio options on the receiver, the HD audios never come up. The best I can do is Dolby Prologic II. Any ideas?

Matt

If you are saying this because you don't see the DTS HD or True HD on your Onkyo, then you misunderstand how things work. Your PS3 can only decode the HD audio and send it as LPMC to your Onkyo. In doing this, you will hear the HD audio, but it will not show as such on your display. It will only show on the Onkyo display if you bitsream the audio, but the PS3 cannot bitstream HD audio.

Make sure your PS3 is set to LPCM and you'll be hearing all of the HD audio like you should.

PS3 decodes both and outputs them as multichannel PCM. Above is an great how-to. You'll have to be using HDMI for those, of course.

Thanks guys. I already had it set to Linear PCM but I guess I was looking for the Dolby True HD on the display of the Onkyo. It still sounds awesome though.

When you're watching the movie, press select on your SixAxis. The audio format will be displayed up in the right corner.

Sounds like you are applying some surround processing to the PCM. I'm not sure what it's called in Onkyo language but on my friend's Pioneer 07, it's set to "Direct". Is there a reason to do this other than to make 5.1 into 6.1 or 7.1?

I recommend setting the Onkyo listening mode to "multichannel" mode for the best sound when listening to LPCM (which is what your getting from the ps3) it does sound much better than "direct". This is true for movies and games too. check the difference while a movie is playing and get back to me.

Had an Onkyo. Had a PS3. Set the PS3 to LPCM. Have the Onkyo on multichannel instead of direcet for best results.
