so over the past few days my blu player has been unable to read discs on multiple occasions, its only happened a few times and just started. it seems to have a harder time recognizing some more then others, and once it registers there is a disc in the tray it plays the movie fine. if my good old pal "disc read error" is paying me a visit i hope it waits till the new players are out, because i can't go without my movies.
damn these smoking habits, i have like a 100% disc read error record going on with like every piece of equipment i have owned since cd's first came out. |

Well, to each his own. Keep in mind most people don't smoke because they want to, but because they can't stop.
Generally, I try to keep smoke away from electronics. At the very least, you could make a dedicated smoking room with decent ventilation (keep that door closed) or ideally, take your smoking outdoors. Either of these will really prolong the life of your electronics. If you can get in the habit of smoking outside, you'll also keep your house smelling fresh and looking cleaner, and probably increase its resale value. |

Tobacco kills. The ONLY reason people smoke is due to the highly addictive LEGAL DRUG that is contained in the cigarette: nicotine. If nicotine was removed from cigarettes by government mandate, smokers would eventually end up giving up the habit once the nicotine is gone. It breaks my heart to see people smoke because they are cutting their lives short - and making others wealthy at the expense of their own lives. My next door neighbor is 61 years old. She chain-smokes three packs a day. That's almost $5,000 a year for cigarettes. ![]() ![]() Her larynx is burned from smoking and her voice sounds like a man. She always feels sick and never goes to the doctor because she is scared that "they will find something." I fear that she may pass away very soon. She said to me, "When I die I want two things in my coffin with me: my cigarettes and a lighter." Very sad. But she does smoke outside.... never in the house. |

![]() When I was 11 my uncle was dying of cancer. Then some of my friends tried smoking and I ended up losing my group, some of whom I'd been friends with since pre-school. It hurt, but I guess they weren't real friends after all. My uncle passed away 3 weeks later, and since then I've lost too many more family members to cancer. I've never smoked and NO amount of peer pressure can change that. I'd rather be unpopular than get cancer. And krazeyeyez, I hope that in 20 years, "disc read errors" will still be the worst of your smoke-related problems. |

I actually knew a guy that left his heart problems untreated because he was such a heavy smoker that he preferred to die of a heart attack rather than lung cancer or another lung disease, since they are notoriously horrible ways to go. He got his wish and died of a heart attack, although probably sooner than he expected, and it devastated his friends and family. |

But, to be honest, I don't really have that much. People know the score, they know it can be very addictive, so they should use their heads. Probably 80% of the people I knew that started smoking as teenagers also didn't bother learning anything in school, etc. Basically the type that's going to be a complete drag (pardon the pun) on society and just doesn't care. And, also, I guess I just don't understand addiction like that. I can understand slacking off, procrastination, and other character flaws based on inaction. But to say that you're compelled to go to a store, plunk down your cash, buy some cigarettes, then smoke all of them? These people aren't lab rats where they just press a button to get dosed with nicotine; they have to put some effort into it. Last edited by TheRealBob; 04-02-2008 at 01:38 PM. |

My mother might not come to my wedding because my wedding is going to be in Illinois where the smokine laws are strict. No smoking 15' from any door or window. No smoking with a child under 8 in a car (my little brother is 7). No smoking in any public place. Our landlord does not want smoking in our house. My fiance gets sick around cigarette smoke. She would have to ride the train where there's only a few smoke breaks. Bummer, but I really want her to quit.
