Default Screwed By Fry's

So. Many of you know I was really stoked to pick up my KDS-55A3000 from Fry's today for the heavily discounted price of $1259. According to the salesperson, it was just a show model and their last unit. When I bought it, they had to take it right off the showroom floor and wrap it up in bubble wrap. We got home, unwrapped it, turned it on, and immediately popped in a variety of blus to notice the difference over my old set and the quality of the unit. It had definitely exceeded me expectations.

But there was one catch: the remote wasn't working. "Dead batteries" I thought to myself. So I flipped over the remote to swap out the batteries when I see a big "REFURBISHED" sticker on the back of it. I don't know about other states, but it is illegal to sell a refurbished product in the state of California without notifying the consumer. The remote changes the volume, but does performs no other functions. Everything else I need to use to controls built into the side of the TV.

I'm going to tear someone a new ass tomorrow after work at Fry's. I'm going to demand AT LEAST a high quality home theater universal remote to make up for the fact that I was just got completely screwed over. Or maybe a couple hundred dollars in gift cards. I wouldn't have even cared so much if they had just TOLD ME.

Hi,

That looks like a nice TV and it's a great price. Even if you need to replace the bulb ... when you do it should be good as new provided nothing else is wrong with it. I bought a floor model SACD player from Frys and didn't get a remote... did they break the law? Not likely.

I think you should be thrilled with your tv instead of uptight about the remote. Go back and explain they gave you the wrong remote (that's why only volume works.. it's likely a Sony remote but for another set) and see if they can help you.

Good Luck,

Brian

What time you going to Fry's? I wanna make sure I don't run into you this morning . Anyways Fry's tends to sell quite a few refurbished items and sometimes it is in fine print especially in the ad's. Another thing on your "new" sony is check the lamp hours as this may become your next issue for a floor model. I know on my KDF model the lamp replacement was ~$200. I think you can get the lamp hours from the service mode on the TV. Unfortunately I don't remember the sequence to get to the service mode.

Well he or she has a point that they were sold a refurbished product and the salesperson misrepresented the product. I'd be upset about that, and if he or she can quote the law, it's illegal in California to do that.

So, the OP should get some compensation. It's just that he or she doesn't have to be a complete ******* to the people he's going to ask to help out. If they're not sorry or refuse to help, then that's the time to calmly explain that they've broken the law and you will contact the proper government offices about this.

I just wonder if the TV is refurbished too. Is there a way to contact Sony with the serial number and find out about its status and warranty information? Warranties change for refurbished models.

Sometimes the remotes for display models get lost. If that's the case, they threw in that refurbished remote for you just to be nice. Otherwise, I don't see why you wouldn't get the original remote for the TV.

Hey,

It may be the law in Ca that you can't sell a refurbished product as "new" but he bought a floor model TV at a discount... I don't think he should bring his team of lawyers with him when he goes back to Fry's.

I used to live near a Fry's and was happy to buy some "open box" stuff there. They could never find the remote and often the manuals were lost... that was ok because the stuff was heavily discounted.

I hope this poster is happy with his TV... Getting the wrong remote is not so great and hopefully they can find the original remote to his set or he can find it online if he wants it.

(I would try to get the original remote even though I have a Harmony which I love. I find it fun to have the original remotes anyway.)

I would be 100000x more concerned with the set itself then the remote in this case but either way... Buying a HDTV should be fun so I hope it works out.

Hey,

Here's a link to a picture of the original remote.

If what you have doesn't look like this,.. they just gave you the wrong remote.

Try taking the picture so when they pull out the box of loose remotes you will know which one to take.

http://www.remotes.com/remotes/servl...12074128997490

Also,... you can buy the remote from that link if you need it. It's under $50 not "hundreds of dollars".

=Brian

ps. This place has it a few dollars cheaper...

http://www.remotes-express.com/SONY/RM-YD016.html

p.p.s... If you remote looks like the one on the pictures here,.. It may need to be "reset." I found a link from Sony about how to reset the remote to factory settings. I suppose it's programmable and sometimes it may be programed differently from when it was new. Look at the how to reset your remote instructions on this link.

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/mod...28e4860a9c46b7

That's all I got buddy,.. good luck.

Opps,.. I forgot one other thing... See those buttons on top that say "function" if you haven't pressed the one that says TV then maybe the remote is in the mode to control one of the other devices... like a DVD player or something. That would explain why the volume is the only buttons that is working.

Uhhh... this isn't about the remote guys. This was about the fact that they sold me a refurbished product illegally. The remote just tipped me off. Fry's can and will give me what I want. They screwed over my dad a few weeks back on a heavily discounted TV (NOT a floor sample like mine), he went in there, raised hell and got an extra $150 off. If they're not going to be ethical in the way they sell me their TV, then I don't see a reason why I need to to be so nice when I go in there today.

As for the remote, it does belong to my TV, it was attached to it. That and it does work... rarely (only the volume works consistently). I'll have Fry's seeing things my way before the day is over

Prozac? What the hell? If you're going to make a joke, at least select the correct form of medication. Last time I checked, I wasn't depressed. I'm upset that a large retailer was dishonest and unethical with me and sold me a refurbished TV without informing me, which is against the law in my state.

Yeah,... I put the wrong drug...

I don't know my drugs these days....

I fixed it but you got to it before I got back to it.

I do feel for you dude. Fry's gave you a great deal on a great TV and was so very unethical about the whole thing. I bet they thought you were even going to enjoy the new tv instead of just basking in the ethical-ness of the whole transaction.

Either way... I'm glad I'm not working at your local Fry's today. Good Luck,

-Brian

With that mode of thinking, the next time I buy a great car at a great price, the dealer doesn't need to tell me it's a salvage because they sold it to me for a great price?

It wasn't sold as "new".

That's something you're not grasping here.

I am sure Fry's is not on the wrong side of the law here. If it didn't come in it's original box is wasn't sold as new product.

You want to go throw a tantrum and try to strike it rich and hopefully for you they are in a giving mood.

Honestly, I wish you luck, take this to the supreme court if you have too. Just don't go postal.. they people working at Frys are just people doing there jobs... treat them nice Mkay?

I hope something happens to bring you back to the excitement you had in the other thread you started about this transaction yesterday. Getting a great deal on the TV of your dreams ought to be a little more fun then this.

-Brian

I don't get why all your replies are dripping with sarcasm. Fry's sold it to me as an open box display unit. They did not tell me anywhere, even on the receipt that it was a refurbished unit. In doing this, they broke state law. I'm not going in there with the intentions of screaming my head off, but knowing Fry's and how they deal with customer service complaints, even completely legitimate ones, there's a good chance it will come to that. I don't see what's so wrong about pointing out their obvious mistake and asking for a gift card towards the purchase of a universal remote to make up for it.
