Hi Guys Im New In The World Of Bluray But I Have A Question That Maybe Is Not The First One. I Buy A Panasonic 42" Hd Hdtv 1080p And A Ps3 Also A Hdmi Cable. I Watch A Couple Of Movies Like Superman Returns, Xmen 3 And Pearl Harbor And I See A Lot Of Grain In Some Parts Like Little Sands. But The Thing Is That When You See The Special Effects You Dont See That. Any Suggestion If I Need To Costumized My Tv Or Ps3 For Better View Because The Tv Is Original With His Colors.
Thanks |

most movies are shot on film, which is make up of millions of crystals.
grains you see are those crystals which high definition tends to amplified. many sfx shots are done using computer, so they are digitize and clean up for easiness to work, thus you won't see the grains there. |

Basically film always has grain as that's what the image is made up of. Some films are grainier than others.
HD-DVD routinely uses filters to artificially hide the grain but you also lose fine detail (because the grains make up the details). High Definition reveals the grain structure of course and Blu-ray has the disc space to accurately reflect what the original master of a film looks like in reality. Check out films in the cinema for grain too and you will understand why it's important to keep films as close to the director's and cinematographer's intent as possible. Note also that digitally shot films often have grain added during post production in order to resemble the film look more closely. |

What kind of HDTV do you have LCD, Plasma, RP LCD. Certain monitor can exhibit what is called the 'screen door effect', especially when brightness and contrast is set too high. It can be described as a uniform grain across the image ... especially lighter areas....

Like Knight-Errant pointed out cars and chicken little where not created on film and so they should not have film grain. Many are not used to seeing FG on their TV. But FG is part of the normal process of film and so when it is not there, it is a sign of a bad copy and not the other way around. There is no way to have film without FG (obviously more expensive film would have finer grain then cheaper one) , and so when digitized with enough resolution it will appear in the film. You can filter (blur/soften) or over compress and then you will see the FG less, but you will also see less of the other details (the reason for going HD in the first place).
As for not seeing it in special effects, it would depend on other factors. if it is CGI and the digital master was created from the PC output that merged the film with the CGI then the special effect would not have the grain like the rest that came from film. |

On old photo-chemical effects shots the grain would be much worse than the other shots. This was due to the film passing through an optical printer for several passes, layering up the effects (like cell animation). This is also why shots with dissolves and fades tend to get grainier and lower quality in old films so that you can tell when a transition is about to occur. |

i know all about film grain, but the grain i am seeing is much more pronounced. like i look at At World's End, the scene where the ship looks like it is in space and the amount of grain is tremendous. any thoughts?

It's the same principle used by Photography. If you have to shoot in the dark, you have to boost the ISO cause more grain in film medimum and more noise in digital realm Digital Camera have the same issue, but instead of grain, it's noise. But since gain can be adjusted on the fly this usually give you a uneven film. Studio rarely mix Film Print, but some do. All POTC movie have been shot with darkness in mind. The only movie that don't have grain are 100% CGI movie or 100% CGI / BluScreen Pasted Sfx... |

On the main menu of the Star Wars dvd, there is Options tag under the Play tag.
After you click on Options, look for the THX logo (sometimes in the bottom right of the screen, but its not listed in words as an item, its the THX logo) and navigate towards it. You may have to use the left and right arrow buttons to get it to highlight. Then press enter on your remote and your there. I think disney titles also have the THX optimizer on them. If you have a Sony Pictures Blu-Ray movie (ex. Resident Evil, Talledage Nights, Ultraviolet), then enter the word "Sony" from you BD remote at the main menu of the BD movie. (of course using the numbers which is "7669" = Sony) Thats Sony optimizer. ![]() Last edited by danay82; 04-06-2008 at 07:04 AM. |
