Default Help With 7.1 Surround Set-up. 3 Wall Room

I need some help with my set up. I only have 3 walls of which to mount my speakers and really want a 7.1 set up. I am going with in wall/ceiling speakers and I think I might have the right way to do it but just need some clarification/ideas as to whether or not it would be the correct way to do it.
Thanks.

proper calibration should compensate for the extra distance on the left of the diagram. should be fine

I guess I should have said that the left wall is about 15ft away from the left side of the couch. You think it would still be fine to put the speakers on the side walls like the new pic i loaded?

Actually the best way it fits is to be all of the way against the back wall and the right side wall, otherwise the couch is off center to the tv.

Ya, the tv is basically where its gonna be. It is a weird set up with the speakers being either right there or a long ways away. I have no idea how it would sound even with calibration. I am going to get the onkyo 605 and I know it comes with that microphone for calibration but i dont know how well that would work either.

Thats why i was thinking about putting the speakers in the ceiling above the couch and the others right behind it.

You could put all the surrounds in/on the ceiling. Some in-ceiling speakers allow you to aim the drivers individually.
What is the ceiling material?

Your side surrounds can definitely go into the ceiling to compensate for the side wall differences. I don't think your rear surrounds would need to go into the ceiling or walls, but they would benefit from being raised up a bit to blend better with the ceiling-mounted side surrounds.

Are you sure you really want to go through the time, expense, and difficulty to make that room a 7.1 surround setup? I think it would sound fine if you left it at 6.1, and that would still cover most of the available soundtracks. Just a suggestion though.

Even with a 6.1 wouldn't I still have the same issue with the side speakers?

No, the sides will work well in the ceiling.
In my opinion, if you go with 6.1, why not 7.1? It's about the sane amount of work, and you take advantage of the full capability of the receiver.

What material is the ceiling made from?

I believe just regular drywall. there is flood lights installed into the ceiling currently. Would i just place the ceiling speakers directly overhead?

There is the "small" matter of running the wires!
Depending on how the joists run, this could be difficult or impossible.
Is this a basement room?

That's a big help!
Sounds like 4 ceiling speakers is the way to go.
You have probably considered this already, but are you able to rotate the entire theater 90 deg. to get more distance for the 7.1 surrounds?

Just be sure the 605:
  • has 1.3 HDMI in/out
  • handles the new audio codecs
