I thought the hardware wasn't there despite it using an HDMI 1.3 chip. It'd be nice if it could bitstream though...

What would be the benefit of bitstreaming the audio as opposed to setting the PS3 to Linear PCM and allowing a receiver to do the work? I'm not criticizing the post, I'm honestly curious what (if any) difference there would be.

I may be wrong, but I believe that you have it opposite. When you have the PS3 set to Linear PCM, the system decodes the track, not the receiver. When bitstreamed, the receiver does the work (also shows up as DTS HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD on the display of the receiver).

Sorry, I did write that wrong - but the question remains: what's the benefit of bitstreaming as opposed to just sticking with the Linear PCM setting? I mean, aside from being able to see the HD audio type on my receiver's display? Would there be any sound quality advantages...even theoretically?

....leaves one to wonder if newer model PS3's have now been equipped with the updated hdmi chips?

...or, the guy who wrote the blog doesn't realize the current hdmi chips cannot bitstream (most likely scenario) and is retarded for asking for such a request.

i have mixed feelings on that. i know there is really no difference. but i did fork over 600 bucks for a 60 gig ps3 and another 600 for a 705 (prices at the time) it would be nice to see the logos

I don't know what evidence there is or if it is just subjective but some with high end receivers with high end digital audio convertors (dac) claim bitstream sounds better. When I bit stream lossy DD 5.1 to my Onkyo I have to say it does sound a little louder or clearer' and I have dynamic range control set to off on my ps3 so there may be something to the claims of bitstream sounding better.

well thats lossy. hd audio is suppose to be bit for bit and if one way of decoding is better than another, then how does that affect the over all bit for bit?

ps3 sending out LPCM uses the same high end DAC's.

Well, I see his point, though. Lossy or not, one may *sound* better than another. If he's saying that bitstreaming sounds slightly better to him than Linear with lossy, well...it's not as if you're hearing *different* bits doing one or the other, the encoding has already been done on the disc, it's only the DEcoding method that's being changed, and that could (theoretically) lead to an (entirely subjective) sound quality differential. Whether it's lossy or not doesn't matter. I understand exactly what it is you're saying, too...but I think you're missing the point. You're technically hearing the same signal doing it either way, Linear OR bitstream - with lossy OR lossless. In theory, if lossy *sounds* slightly better through bitstream, then lossless should as well. Whether what you're hearing is technically any *different* on a bit by bit level, well...that's not a subjective matter. By definition, it is not.
