Default Onkyo speakers?

Now that my Onkyo 605 is on my way (hopefully no more than a week), i need a good speakers better that my actual Sony's $199 HTiB speakers.
I am looking at this ones (Onkyo SKS-HT540):

http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4121853

Is really worth it

I accept other options on my budget

While Onkyo makes some very nice receivers, their speakers are definitely not of the same quality.

The first thing that jumps out at me is that you're looking to spend less on 6 speakers than your receiver? While the receiver does make a difference, hooking up a $500 receiver to $300 speakers is going to sound like $300 speakers. Ideally, your speaker budget should be well above your receiver budget.

If you're truly looking to keep to that budget for speakers, your options are going to be fairly limited for quality. Someone posted a link in another thread for a $300 Polk setup from Amazon that didn't look too bad.

I have a Paradigm setup in my HT, but have speakers from Yambeka Audio in our living room. They sound great for the price I spent - which was $168 shipped. They have a new version that look even nicer than the ones I have, but the price also jumped to $300, which still hits your budget.

http://www.yambekaaudio.com

This is the thread that convinced me to buy the speakers (again, at a much cheaper price for the older model):
http://www.satelliteguys.us/v-receiv...peaker-ht.html

I also had a great customer service experience with them. One of the tower speakers was damaged during shipping and had a chip in the cabinet. I sent an email and had a replacement on my doorstep 2 days later.

Always worth having great speakers, because they will follow you from theater system to theater system.

You are in a great position now, because you can buy VERY nice fronts and a center channel and keep your sony's for surrounds until you get more money.

It might be a little frustrating to do it that way, but you will LOVE your system to death when you are done.

I can't say enough about Paradigm speakers, but Polk audio will also be very good to you.

That's exactly what I did. I had a budget in mind, but I fell in love the the Paradigms and decided I'd rather spread my purchases over time to get better product that to spend less up front to stick with my budget. While it was very trying to wait, once I had my setup complete, it was sooooo worth it!

I'm not going to say Paradigm is right for you specifically, because they might not be to your taste. But if your budget is fairly low, you might come out ahead to buy a few pieces at a time to end up with a better system in the long run.

Good luck!

I agree with what the others said. Speakers, to me are one the biggest investments of a home theater. I remember reading something online and it said, "They say a picture is worth 1000 words, but the sound is half of the picture!" I couldn't agree more and suggest that you save up some money little by little and buy some nice fronts (L, C, R) and use the fronts from your Sony HTiB as the surrounds. What's the use of having a nice HD tv showing a huge explosion if you can't hear and feel it right?

Do you have a preference for bookshelf style speakers or floorstanding? Maybe we could help.

I have those speakers. I replaced a mix and match set of 5.1 speakers.

I bought them thinking that I would replace them as I could with something better. I'm not so sure that I wll. Certainly, there are better sounding speakers, but these sound really nice and I wouldn't have to spend anymore more money.

I've got those speakers and they are good but not great. I don't think very highly of the center speaker in particular. Voices are often not clear and it can be tough to understand what people are saying at times. I just ordered some new speakers today to replace these. Not a bad set for starters, but not a long term solution.

I have those...love em.

except I just blew out the sub this last weekend...oh well.

You will be seriously impressed with them..they will get you through for a couple of year until you can afford separates. Thats what I am working towards...but, they sound so good that you won't be in a hurry, trust me.

I just picked up the ONKYO SKS-HT240 6.1 speaker system with my 705. It's got excellent sound. The set usual runs about $700, but it's on sale at Amazon (through J&R) for about the same price as those other speakers. I definitely have not been disappointed with them so far.

I would only buy speakers from a company the makes ONLY speakers. There are plenty of budget speakers from good speaker companies, Paradigm, Energy, PSB, NHT, Mission, Definitive Technology, Mirage, the list goes on. Don't blind buy, go listen to some speakers and decide based on what you like.

i have the ONKYO SKS-HT240 6.1 speakers too i love the way they sound as well as the look of them very sleek looking especially on the onkyo stands. the sub is pretty big as well shakes the hell out of my house lol. i was able to get an extra speaker through ebay they sell them as bookshelf speakers as well if 7.1 is important to you.

I have those (came with my HT-S790, which is so nice you can't really call it an HTiB)--they are very nice. The surrounds lack oomph, but are adequate. If you look at my sig, I'm saving up for new speakers, but I am saving up A LOT. Read some reviews about the HT-S790 and the SKS-HT540--you'll find that the general consensus is that "there are speakers out there that sound better, but you could spend a lot more and end up with a lot less."

The Onkyos are very serviceable and will not disappoint. Given their very reasonable price range, they will keep you very happy, allowing you to keep your patience while you build up the big bucks for a $12,000 pair of ML Summits. Or something

I have a question for those others of you have this speaker package:

During loud passages, will your subwoofer rattle inside? Mine does this when cranked up, is this normal? I'd like to know because it's still under warranty; if this isn't normal, I'll get it fixed for free. And no, I didn't blow it out; I don't crank it up that loud. Small room, you see.

As a side note to the OP (sorry for the mini-threadjacking): the sub is very powerful, but only has good not great definition.

Yea my old Sony does that. I think it is the quality and it sounds cheap when high sound inputs into it..

Default I like my Onkyo SKS-HT540

I got the Onkyo SKS-HT540 when I got the Onkyo SR605 receiver July 2007 and I like them alot. I got them new from Vann's on sale for just under $300. The speakers are a little large (these are NOT satellite speakers) but the sound is great. I am not an audiophile so the sound quality is more than adequate for me.

The only issue I had was mounting the front speakers. I wanted to wall mount the front and center speakers. Unfortunately only the surround speakers came with mounting eyelets. I had to rig a shelving system with metal bookends screwed into the walls. It took a little time, but it worked well since you can't tell they are mounted on anything when sitting on the couch. Maybe the Onkyo SKS-HT740 will have mounting eyelets on all the speakers since they are all the same size.

at bluseminole. I have not noticed any rattling from the subwoofer.

Hmmm...thank you very much. It is noticeable, especially in Casino Royale when the building collapses, and in Crimson Tide whenever the outside of the subs are shown. If you don't notice any, it is certainly worth a call to customer service. Gotta love the two year manufacturer's warranty!

yeah...mine had the rattling....

I have had this set since last March and my sub finally blew about 3 weeks ago....it wasn't up for how much I wanted out if it, I guess....saving up for a better sub now.....fronts and center are adequate for my area, but, thinking about upgrading my sides and rears also...
