Default Ok Tax Refund 2008

Ok I basically have a crappy not even real surround sound. so with the new check i wanna get a new reciever. I have the ps3. i know they now have dts-ma. so i want a reciever that can do that. Is the Onkyo 605 the best bet right now? i just wanna get hi def sound. i only have a 5.1 set up. well it still sound ok without the 2 other speakers? and if i just wanna get some standard speakers whats a good option for the extra 2 that i need? thanks guys

Yes, the 605 gives you good performance with a low price tag, it's a safe bet and a good step up from plain ol' surround sound. You'll love it. And yes, it'll still sound great with a 5.1 speaker setup (only a handfull of movies use 7.1 anyway).

+1

Its the same thing that I use and I only have a 5.1 setup as well. I recently upgraded to this from a $99 receiver and it really shows off my speakers and subwoofer. Very nice system and cheap price.

The PS3 decodes it, so you don't need a reciever that can decode it as well. The 605 is still a decent reciever, get it if you like it, but all you need is a receiver that can accept LPCM audio signals over HDMI.

Another thing, 1080p only refers to the video signal, there is no such thing as "1080p sound". I think what you read is that the 605 only upconverts analog signals to 720p instead of upconverting to 1080p.

YES!

Be sure to use an HDMI cable to connect your video/audio though or else you won't be able to hear it or TrueHD sound.

Correct, it accepts LPCM (via HDMI). Best up-to-date sound codecs will play. The 605 has two HDMI inputs and one HDMI ouput.

Yes, with this reciever you will get both. It will accept any audio signal over HDMI and output it to your speakers. The reciever will also take any hi-def signal input to it over HDMI and repeat it over the HDMI out to your TV.

ill prop grab the 605 silver at amazon for 345. what makes me so scared about buying a reciever (cuz i have never been into sound) is that i cant picture hearing or telling the difference from what i hear now. i hear footsteps and other sounds from behind me. so im like what am i gonna hear that i dont now. visually you can see the differences but sound i just dont know lol. so all i need is the reciever, my 2 back speakers. 2 front speakers. my center channel, and my subwoofer? ( i will add the other 2 side speakers soon) anyone know what 2 side spears i need? are they the same as the backs? or are they bigger?

Also, I only use the HDMI ports for 2 things:

-Cable Box
-PS3

If you use it for more things then I recommend to get a different receiver as this should be a big consideration in your receiver selection.

Technically all your speakers (except for the subwoofer) are the same if you want to. Look for Bookcase speakers for the side/rear speakers.

right now for my back surround sound i am using 2 satellite speakers. i have the wires coming up from the basement. i have nowhere to put 2 extra speakers except from the ceiling down which i can do cuz i have a beam there. but a bookshelf speaker wouldnt work.

onkyo 605 is a great receiver...ps3 does the decoding for hd audio..and sends out via pcm multichannel...so you wont see "dts ma" on your receiver....not onkyo's fault...its just because ps3 doesnt bitstream

DEFINITELY! Before the PS3 could do DTS-HDMA, the 605 was only getting the core DTS 5.1 track, not the "real" deal. Of course, you need to have a semi-decent speaker set up to enjoy it, but definitely worth going from an older receiver to one that does DTS-HDMA and TrueHD.
