I'm new to the Blu-Ray on PC game.
My DVD Drive came with PowerDVD 7, and most of the OEM bundle versions are realistically coasters. What's the best - most feeatured - most compatible software avaiable....and why? |

I'm on the fence about both programs to be honest
with pdvd 7 you have to turn off dep for the program to play all movies properly, which isn' thard, but after that it will play everything without hiccup Windvd 9 was my favorite until i watched the golden compass which windvd 9 makes the movie look like its on crack.... the colors keep changing and wiggling... really strange... no fix that i know of... now now guys, its not a coaster, its basically a coupon to get the full version at a discount... just install, and do an upgrade buy of the full version will save you 30-40 bucks... either program will do though... but windvd you will pay more for unless you know people |

Coupon and pesky rebate versus torrent and keygen....... hmmmm
![]() Actually - and maybe it's the way it was filmed, PDVD7 (coaster version) didn't look all that great with Golden compass - everything had a hue to it that changed - like lighting effects. |

This is a consideration for anyone building an HTPC.
You can buy the drives - but the software generally seems to suck. Another note - I'm on a Core 2 Duo 4600 / XP Pro / 4GB / 500GB 7200 16mb SATA2 setup now - is the loading of Blu-Ray movies just THAT slow, or does the playback software just suck that bad ? |

These laptops seem to load the movies pretty fast - with either WinDVD or PowerDVD(if the players are already started, longer if Auto-Play has to start them).
20 seconds(give or take) and I see the initial lead-in screens/trailers. Skipping the trailers on some discs takes longer than waiting for the disc to load. ![]() #1 Core Duo T2500, 7600GT #2 Core 2 Duo T8100, 8400 GT |

20 seconds? About the same.
5-10 is about what I would consider acceptable. |

I think the most i've waited is for disney movies, but that was waiting through the death sentence they call "coming soon to disney bluray and disney dvd"
that you can't forward through (only skip)... and lasts 15 previews deep... but as for loading, 5-15 seconds is what my usual wait is... but not bad really, i don't mind it, give me more time to grab a beer, and some candy from the kitchen |

Curse of the impatient I suppose - when I push the gas pedal, I expect the car to go.

You are correct. DEP = Data Execution Prevention
In English it's called "UMSBS" (Useless Microsoft BS) |
