Default PS3 audio and receiver with no HDMI

Hey guys,

I just got my PS3 this week and will be hooking it up via HDMI to watch movies on my Samsung. I have a receiver and surround sound system in the room that we used for our DVDs, but the receiver is from the pre-HDMI era, so it has no input/output for that. Is there a way around this so I can still listen to the lossless audio decoded on my PS3 through my surround sound speakers?

no. sorry.

You can use an optical cable to get 2.0 Lossless, but thats not surround.

PS3 is HDMI only for surround lossless.

Yes, no loss less surround sound but you could still get 5.1 DD or 5.1 DTS via the optical link.

Same here. I've got a BOSE LifeStyle 18, and sadly that receiver does not support HDMI... luckily it supports optical and I am pretty happy with it thus far.

Don't mean to hijack your thread, I just don't want to start a new one.

I've had my (sony STR-de545) receiver for years now and I'm pretty happy with it. My question is...if I upgrade the receiver (probably the 720, 820 or the Onkyo 605), will I be able to notice a difference in the quality of sound from the speakers?

My current speakers:

Floor-standing (Sony - 150w)
Center (Pioneer - 150w)
Sub (Sony)
Insignia (40w) - eventually this will be upgraded

Thanks!
