I need help guys I purchased a BDP-S1 player, It looks great when it doesn't freeze up on me so Im taking it back today. I found out they have PS3's in stock at my local BB. now would it be best if I exchange it for one (Save $400) or get a new BDP-S1.. not really sure which is best in quality???

Here is a pretty good review of the PS3:

http://ultimateavmag.com/hddiscplayers/1206ps3blu/

At the end of the review (page 4) they compare it to both the BD-P1000 and the BDP-S1
Quote:
The PS3 unequivocally earns its keep as a BD player for a home theater environment, although the non-gamers among you will certainly want that optional Blu-ray Disc remote. It's not quite good enough on standard DVD playback to unseat very good, up-to-date, standalone DVD players, but in all other respects it earns top scores.

Compared to Samsung's BD-P1000 and (briefly) Sony's BDP-S1 as BD players, the PS3 is superior in absolute picture quality to the former, and more than holds its own with the latter. And it kills both in terms of startup and disc access speed and overall ergonomic prowess and stability. It's just bullet proof, and aside from being the coolest looking piece of gear ever, it's the only next-gen player so far that behaves like one in every respect. And of course, its connectivity and audio decoding features are tops too, although you really need an AVR or pre/pro equipped with HDMI 1.1, or later, to unleash its potential.

All of the above would be enough to earn the PS3 a rave review as a BD player even if it were on par with the prices of the standalone BD players. But it's not- even the upscale $600 PS3 is by far the least expensive BD player available.

The PS3 performs like hell and is one of the best deals going. Not that I'd kill or injure someone over one, mind you, but I'm not sure I'd judge anyone who does too harshly after living with it. My thumb's way up on this one- PS3 rocks!

Default Ps3

The PS3 kicks ass. Do the firmware upgrade either through broadband or download onto a memory stick. The unit is flawless. Best investment I made all year. Classy, built like a tank and sexy looking in the gloss black. Can't say enough about this unit. Plays Blu-Ray without a hitch and the games. Wireless controller will last days before you have to recharge unlike the shitty 360 remote which apparently takes AAA batteries, drains them within 3 hours and you are NOT to use rechargables in the unit. 360 has no HDMI out either.

I had a Sony BDP-S1 and returned it when I got a PS3. I still want a stand alone player, likely another Sony, but the speed and other flaws were an issue enough for me to decide to wait on a 2nd generation player. Very happy with the PS3, all around great BD player along with the fact it's a game player.

Go with the PS3 unless you have a display that accepts 1080P/24. The standalone Sony also has a firmware update if you decide to keep it. PS3 is great value for the money.

Cool Thks a lot guys, I called again to BB and they have plenty of PS3's instock, so I will be exhanging it for one, and with the extra $400 I can get some extra BD to add to my 10 titles. I'll have to return my 2 free BD's I got which I guess its not to bad sinc they were two bad choices I made Ultraviolet and Brothers Grimm

I also had a standalone BDP-S1 player and returned it to BB. Right off the gate, it wouldn't play Blu Ray discs and I had to reboot it twice before it recognized it's first disc. It took a long time to boot up and a long time to spin up the disc. Then it wouldn't play a brand new Blue Ray disc I had just opened. During the playback of other discs it frequently locked up. I had heard that there was firmware updates for it but for the $800 I spent, I wasn't going to hassle. I returned it to BB and bought a PS3.

It boots up super fast, the discs spin up and play super fast and I've never had a glitch. I love it. You would think the giant BDP-S1 would function the same as the PS3 but it's way behind it in my opinion.
