Default ps3 cooling unit

My ps3 broke down on me (worked flawlessly for about 5 months)--the movie I was watching played fine until about 20min into the movie it freezes and then a message pops up saying 'invalid disc'; after that I tried another movie and the same thing happened. Only this time seconds into the movie it stopped and came up with 'invalid disc'.
So I took it back to the store I bought it from and they said I should have kept it in an air-conditioned room or used the 'cooling unit' (I live in Sri Lanka, and it's quite hot). And, I can't do the things you guys do by calling Sony normally when your ps3 breaks down because that service is unavailable here.
So what they do is they send it to Singapore to have it made. So I gave mine to them for repair.
The question is, should I buy this cooling unit once my ps3 comes back repaired? I heard it was not good for your ps3?
Help would really be appreciated.

I've considered one of these "cooling units", although they're far from perfect so I've heard, I had also been led to believe that it could quite possibly mess with your PS3 unit being that the cooling unit would over-cool it and the processor may be fooled into thinking it's cooler than it actually is and burn up.

Just what I've heard, not a deffinate opinion.

Do not get a cooling fan add-on for your ps3 it's bad for the system because it draws power from the system to power the fans.

But what other choice do I have? It's a very hot climate here and is prone to heating more than where you guys live, what am I to do? It may be the only choice of preserving my ps3 for prolonged durability.

The fans should do their job. Just keep it in a open area and you should be fine just don't waist your money on that cooling fan.

But mine is a 80gb ps3, unlike your 40gb one which has two fans.

Doesn't matter they built the ps3 to withstand heat and cold. If you have a portable fan put that behind your ps3 to keep it cool.

sorry, but why behind the ps3? I just directed my fan at the side where the ventilators were.

your fan that you were thinking about getting hooks up in the back of the ps3 that's where the fans are so that's why you you need to put it in the back.

Thats what he means. The back changes depending on if your PS3 is sitting or laying down.

Though, technically the air-flow things go on the side of the ps3... which is probably where you have it.

Yeah, just keep it atleast 3 to 6inches away from the wall and in a well vented area, it should be fine.

At the moment it's very hot here too and my fans keep going off, you can tell because the sound of the fans is quite loud, but not so bad if you're playing a game or movie and have the sound up at a moderate enough level.

No, it really shouldn't

You need to run the thing in an air conditioned room, Sri Lanka is too hot and humid not to. It can't dissipate the heat properly

It sounds to me like your drive died though, not necessarily a heat issue (though that will certainly crop up)

Makes me wonder if the heat from being in that part of the world would warp what holds the laser. iirc that was the issue with the very first runs of PS2 (maybe not due to heat)...

Thanks for all your guys info, and yes it seems to be a problem with the drive.
So the drive dying isn't a case of over-heating? What causes the drive to die?
