I couldn't help but notice members of the forum posting how the PS3 is so quiet. I don't know if it is because I have mine standing vertically on the top shelf, but it starts the fan about 5 minutes after it is turned on.
Perhaps I should try to stand it horizontally or move it somewhere better ventilated? |

I have mine sitting horizontally and it's even tucked into a shelf in my entertainment center. The fan never comes on unless I close the door. *Obviously*. I have never had any problems. Try setting it on its side.

Mine is also next to the Wii, but it's shoved back into the corner of the shelf because I never use it. I bought all four games on the system that I like (and the only four that should be allowed to be for sale on the shelves) and now its collecting dust.

The "magic" temperature is right at 70 deg F.
![]() It also helps (wrt noise level) if you can orient the ps3 such that the vents do not have a direct "line of sight" to your ears. If you put it in an enclosed area with open front, that can also magnify the fan sound (even if the fan is running low). Basically that is capturing all of that reverberant field (that normally would dissipate into space) and reflecting it back in your direction (think about it like hearing a motorcycle at the end of a tunnel vs. hearing it in an open field). |

I remembered seeing thos thermal pics before after seeing a friend with his 80gb ps3 running horizontally and very quiet.
I suspected that orientation may have some effect. I will try to rearrange things tonight or this weekend as well as I don't want my ps3 to burnout and I am tired of hearing a vacuum cleaner in every scene of every movie I watch. |

Just to follow up. I moved my PS3 to the top of my tv last night and watched two movies, 1 bluray and 1 DVD.
THe fan didn't come on this time until about 40 minutes into the first movie. It then turned off in about 15 minutes As soon as I turned on the 2nd movie, the fan came out after about 10 minutes and stayed on through the rest of the movie. Anyone have ideas? Is there a problem with my ps3? |

I was curious if it was safe to stand the ps3 in the vertical or horizontal position. Thanks for the read.
other comments : Nice! my ps3 just arrived. Tonight is going to be fun. Hopefully I don't have any problems with the setup. |
